Hardcover. Condition: Near Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: Very Good. First Edition. First printing with isbn mismatch between book and jacket and adways for always on pg. 27, one of only 1577 copies. NF book with some edition notes in pencil to half-titleVG+ or better jacket with spine faded, some minor foxing to jacket interior and minor edge-wear. This is Maclean's much acclaimed and only novella collection written upon his retirement. Within Maclean draws upon his experience growing up in western Montana on the rivers and in the forest service. The title story memorializes his troubled brother Paul who was murdered in 1938 and elevates fly fishing to a higher spiritual plane. The collection was recommended by the 1977 Pulitzer fiction jury, but their recommendation was overruled by the Pulitzer board and no prize was issued that year. The title story would become the basis of the 1992 Robert Redford film starring Brad Pitt.

Hardcover. Condition: Near fine. Dust Jacket Condition: Very Good. First edition. 217pp. Octavo [22 cm] Light blue boards with silver lettering on the spine. Minor bruising to the spine ends. In the dust jacket ($7.95 on flap), with minimal toning to the spine, light rubbing and creasing to the edges, and a short closed tear to the top edge of the fold of the front inside flap. "Adways" on p. 27. ISBN on copyright page is 022650051. ISBN on rear flap is 022650051. A first edition of Maclean's collection of three semi-autobiographical stories taking place in the American West. This book, published when the author was 73 years old, was the only book that Norman Maclean (1902-1990) published during his lifetime. "A River Runs Through It" has proven to be one of the most enduring American stories ever written. From the dust jacket- "Maclean's rich understanding of human nature is evident in his descriptions, not only of how men worked in the woods, but how they felt while they worked and after they finished working. We meet Chief Ranger Bill Bell, master of men and mules and a chump at cribbage and poker; Jim, the unforgettable sawyer, part-time pimp, and socialist who thought Eugene Debs was soft; and the author's younger brother, Paul, who was one of the greatest fly fishermen in the West and for whom the title story is a memorial." "Based on Norman Maclean's childhood experiences, 'A River Runs Through It' has established itself as one of the most moving stories of our time; it captivates readers with vivid descriptions of life along Montana's Big Blackfoot River and its near magical blend of fly fishing with the troubling affections of the heart." First edition of Maclean's classic first book. Octavo, original cloth. Fine in a near fine dust jacket. Jacket photograph by Joel Snyder. "[Maclean] would go to his grave secure in the knowledge that anyone who'd fished with a fly in the Rockies and read his novella on the how and why of it believed it to be the best such manual on the art ever written--a remarkable feat for a piece of prose that also stands as a masterwork in the art of tragic writing" (Philip Connors, The Nation). Adapted to the immensely successful film, directed by Robert Redford, starring Brad Pitt, Craig Sheffer and Tom Skerritt. It went on to win an Academy Award for Best Cinematography.

Almost rare in the 1st Printing because of the small press run. The University of Chicago Press printed a small run as a favor to Professor Maclean because he taught at the University. It was the first book of fiction ever published by the press. They never expected it to go through so many printings. I found a number of 1st Printings when I book scouted in Chicago because most dealers didn t know how to identify the true 1st printing. The dust jacket is often rubbed on the edges unless they are protected with a clear DJ cover. This copy has no writing or deformities on the book. This copy in a clear DJ protector has a Near Fine DJ with slight sunning on the spine & very minor rubbing of the spine ends. The book itself is Very Fine. $2300.

Norman Maclean's 1976 semi-autobiographical short story collection, including the titular piece along with "Logging and Pimping and 'Your pal, Jim'" and "USFS 1919: The Ranger, the Cook, and a Hole in the Sky." In 1977 the Pulitzer Prize committee suggested "A River Runs Through It" be awarded the prize for fiction, but they were overruled and no prize was awarded. The book was adapted into a 1992 Robert Redford film, starring Craig Scheffer and Brad Pitt and would receive three Academy Award nominations. Critic Alfred Kazin praised the book in a review for the Chicago Tribune: "There are passages here of physical rapture in the presence of unsullied primitive America that are as beautiful as anything in Thoreau and Hemingway.".
