About this Item: London: Victor Gollancz Ltd, 1937, 1937. Octavo. Original orange limp cloth, titles to spine and front panel in black. Housed in a custom flat-backed orange folding case. Partially erased ownership inscription to front free endpaper. A little foxing to edges of text block. An exceptional copy. With 16 photographic plates. First edition, first impression, signed by the author on the front free endpaper. It is extremely scarce signed, with no other copies traced at auction. Orwell originally believed The Road to Wigan Pier would not be included in Gollancz's Left Book Club as "it is too fragmentary and, on the surface, not very left-wing" (Fenwick). By 29 December 1936, however, the work was set as a choice for the March 1937 list. By the time the book was published Orwell was fighting the civil war in Spain and did not see a copy of this edition until late April when he was home on leave. A casebound trade issue of 2,150 copies was also released. Fenwick A5a. Seller Inventory # 120734

About this Item: London: Victor Gollancz, 1937, 1937. FIRST EDITION. Octavo (22 x 15 cm), pp.viii; 264. With 32 black and white photographic plates. Not including the foreword, which appeared in the first Left Book Club edition. In publisher's blue cloth with yellow titles to spine. With original light yellow dust-jacket with titles to spine and front cover. Some spotting to prelims and edges; heavy tobacco scent. Very slight reading lean. Chipping to jacket corners and head and tail of spine; spine lightly browned. Very good indeed. Orwell's famous sociological analysis of working class life in the bleak industrial heartlands of Northern England prior to the Second World War, commissioned by Victor Gollancz in January 1936. Orwell received a £500 advance (two years' income for him at the time), and researched the book by spending the harsh winter of 1936 living in Barnsley, Sheffield and Wigan; three urban areas of heavy industry producing coal, steel and textiles respectively. The book was chosen by Gollancz for its popular Left Book Club, which issued most of the copies printed (over 44,000) in 1937, making the first Gollancz trade edition of just 2,150 copies very rare, especially in a jacket. Fenwick, G; George Orwell. A Bibliography [A.5b], (1998). Seller Inventory # 49532

About this Item: Blackstone Audiobooks, Ashland, 1992. No binding. Condition: New. Six 1 1/2 hour cassettes. Six New audio cassettes. SOCIALISM. When Orwell went to the north of England in the 1930s to find out how industrial workers lived, he not only observed but shared their experience. He stayed in dreary lodgings - for a time he occupied the fourth bed in a small airless room - and subsisted on the scant, cheerless diet of the poor. He went down into the coal mines and walked crouching, as the miners did, from one to three miles to the coal face through a passage too low to stand up in. He watched the backbreaking, dangerous labor of men whose net pay averaged $525 a year. And he knew the unemployed - people who had been out of work for years and who had sunk beyond despair into an inhuman apathy. The first part of this book is the searing yet beautiful account of what Orwell found "on the road to Wigan Pier." In the second part he asks why Socialism, which alone in his opinion could conserve human values from the ravages of industrialism, had so little appeal. His answer was so critical of the Socialism and Socialists of his time that Victor Gollancz of the Left Book Club, under who auspices the book was written, was impelled to dispute Orwell in a foreword that has itself become famous.
