About this Item: Ishi Press, United States, 2015. Paperback. Condition: New. Language: English . Brand New Book ***** Print on Demand *****.Stuart Chase (1888-1985) was an Economics graduate from MIT, and this was one of his many publications on the topic of socialism and Economics. The revival in interest in the book came after it was linked, by Glenn Beck, to a Barack Obama 2012 campaign video called The Road We ve Traveled. Beck made several links between Obama s presidential goals and the themes in Chase s book: strong centralized government, Control of banking, credit and security exchanges, Underwriting of food, housing and medical care by the government, and Use of deficit spending to finance under writings among others. Another interesting literary tie in about the author was that early in his career he took a job with the Food Administration of the FTC with his fellow MIT classmates Walter Lippman, John Reed and T.S. Eliot. One of the cases Chase investigated at this post was corruption of the meatpacking industry with none other than Upton Sinclair. In 1942, Stuart Chase, in this book The Road We Are Traveling spelled out the system of planning the Fabian Socialists had in mind. Seller Inventory # AAV9784871873406

About this Item: The Twentieth Century Fund, New York, 1946. Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. Dust Jacket Condition: Very Good. States "10th printing May 1946" (of a book originally begun before Pearl Harbor, and first published April 1942.) On March 19, 2012, Tiffany Gabbay of the Web site theblaze wrote about "The Road We've Traveled," an Obama re-election campaign short film -- alternatively dubbed a piece of "docu-ganda" -- a fawning 17-minute account of what the filmmaker contends were the "community-organizer" president's accomplishments during his first term. Where did the title and theme for this mini propaganda masterpiece originate? Glenn Beck did some digging and found the answer in a book originally published in 1942. On his syndicated radio broadcast, Beck discussed the uncanny resemblance the Obama propaganda piece bore to the book "The Road We Are Traveling 1914-1942," written by FDR admirer Stuart Chase. The book envisions a much improved America once it's dispensed with free enterprise entirely. The post-war government Chase envisioned would provide every citizen with adequate food, housing, clothing, medical care and a job (while "congenital loafers" would be "cared for in sanitariums.") Chase was an American economist, MIT-trained engineer, and Fabian socialist -- an open admirer of the planned economy of the Soviet Union. Often credited with originating the term "New Deal," Chase asked "Why should Russians have all the fun remaking a world?" He favored "Government control over trade, banking, natural resources, transportation, agricultural production, organized labor unions, and youth corps" (FDR's "CCC"), along with "heavy taxation of estates and incomes of the wealthy" and "state control over communications and propaganda." John H. Fahey, chairman of FDR's FSLIC, was president of the Twentieth Century Fund; the list of trustees includes Francis Biddle (presumably FDR's Attorney General), Professor Robert Staughton Lynd, William A. Waymack (chairman of FDR's Economic Policy Committee, 1938-1941), etc. 106 pp. Seller Inventory # 007045
