About this Item: The Artist Book Foundation, United States, 2016. Hardback. Condition: New. Language: English. Brand new Book. This intriguing monograph of painter and printmaker Robert Kipniss is an intimate look at a memorable period in his life and career. 'Robert Kipniss: Paintings and Poetry, 1950-1964' is the result of many arduous months of revisiting his more-than-half- a-century-ago writing, poems that were stashed away and essentially forgotten. 'Some of the poems are straightforward, some are infused with surreal irony, and some are angry,' says Kipniss in his candid and honest Preface. Thoughtful and articulate from conception to completion, his never-before- published poems are choreographed with his early paintings in this contemplation of the influential and foundational years from 1950 to 1964. 'When I stopped writing [in 1961] my vision was no longer divided between word-thinking and picture-thinking: these approaches had merged and in expressing myself I was more whole' reflects Kipniss in his retrospective musings. Readers of this gorgeous volume are all the richer for catching a glimpse of an intensely personal segment of this accomplished artist's private history. In an unambiguous assessment, Kipniss elaborates, 'The most significant insight that arose in this undertaking.came when I began to collate reproductions of my paintings of the 1950s.I could clearly see that my work in the two mediums were from very differing parts of my psyche, and that while they were both in themselves completely engaged, they were not in any way together.' This written and visual account of previously unpublished poems and early paintings, which were critically acclaimed, are accompanied by two astute and illustrative essays that further enlighten. About this Item: The Artist Book Foundation, New York, London, Hong Kong, 2013. Hardcover. Condition: Near Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: Near Fine. 1st Edition. This book has a lot going for it. Personal, compelling, relatable poems. Beautiful, vivid and unique paintings. A Stated First Edition. And I believe this is the Only copy of this book for sale on the Internet that is Signed by the artist. Add to that the excellent condition of both the book and the dust jacket, and to that a very generous price. As you can see from the photographs, the covers of the book are spotless and without any wear. It has been taken very good care of by the only person who has owned it, myself. It was inscribed to me (first name only) when I met Mr. Kipness. The inscription is on the title page. Despite the size of the book it is perfectly bound, absolutely no issues in that regard. It has very attractive dark green end papers. The pages (and the page edges) are very clean. There is no wear on any of them. There is no writing/underlining on any of the pages. No markings. No creases. The dust jacket is Not clipped. It also shows No wear and no soiling. Take a look at the photographs. At 12 1/2 by 10 1/2 inches I will do my best to show you what I can (my scanner surface is not so large as that). The dust jacket will be fitted with a protective cover. Inscribed by Author(s).
