Light soil spot to copyright page and contents, text is otherwise clean and bright, no marks. Lacking the dust jacket. He kept in repair an almost worn-out typewriter, on which he produced a one-page underground newspaper." (from the Foreword). Seller Inventory # N40617

With an engraved frontispiece in each volume and 38 vignettes in the text by George Cruikshank. 8vo, bound in full polished mottled calf by Morrell, the spines very elaborately gilt tooled, with green and red lettering labels, the covers with elaborate gilt tooled borders, a.e.g. xv, 434; [iv], 406 pp. A superb set, very handsome and beautifully preserved, an unusually fine copy. A FINE PRINTING, WELL ILLUSTRATED BY ONE OF ENGLAND’S GREATEST ARTISTS. HANDSOMELY BOUND IN FULL POLISHED AND MOTTLED CALF GILT EXTRA. "Defoe.disclosed a genius for devising a tale of adventure.(the influence of), not yet dissipated, for much of science fiction is basically Crusoe’s island changed to a planet. At least equally relevant.is the figure of the lonely human being subduing the pitiless forces of nature; going back to nature, indeed, and portraying the ;noble savage’ in a way that made the book required reading for Rousseau’s Emile. ROBINSON CRUSOE has long since been more widely read.in versions.for young people.(there is) the footprint in the sand, Man Friday, the threatening savages, and the endless ingenuity and contrivance that make the hero’s island life tolerable." PMM "It breathes throughout a spirit of piety and benevolence; it sets in a very striking light the importance of the mechanic arts.it fixes in the mind a lively idea of the horrors of solitude, and, consequently, of the sweets of social life, and of the blessings we derive from conversation and mutual aid; and it shows how by labouring with one’ s own hands, one may secure independence." Beattie The copy comes from the library of John Kauffman, pioneering conservationist, diplomat, author, sportsman and bibliophile. Seller Inventory # 27996

About this Item: Cosmopolitan Book Corporation, New York, 1920. First Wyeth Edition. Original blue cloth, gilt stamped, with a color pictorial cover label. Illustrated with 12 full-page color plates by Wyeth. This copy owned by Peter Logan Bockius, Jr., the great-grandson of George Bockius, the grandfather of Carolyn Brennerman Bockius Wyeth, the wife of N.C. Wyeth. Carolyn was one of ten children, and Peter's grandfather and namesake, Peter Bockius, was one of seven children. The Bockius' were free-spirited, and the entire extended family, along with N. C. Wyeth, was close-knit. The books are variously inscribed to "Pete" or "Peter L. Bockius, jr" (see individual descriptions below) and either simply signed "N.C. Wyeth" or "from Uncle Convers". Since Peter was not Wyeth's nephew, but rather his wife's second cousin, Wyeth must have felt a particular affection for the boy. Wyeth inscriptions are scarce, and familial presentations are rare. This copy INSCRIBED BY WYETH on the half-title, "A Merry Xmas / to Pete / Uncle Convers / 1922". Spine dulled; frontispiece tissue guard lightly foxed. Covers and contents fine.
