Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. Dust Jacket Condition: Very Good. 3rd Edition. DAYS WITH SIR ROGER DE COVERLEY ILLUSTRATED BY HUGH THOMSON 1892. I guess I should not be so surprised to note that this book is so nicely decorated, illustrated and presented.since it is part of the legacy of British literature. Please find: Days with Sir Roger de Coverley a reprint from The Spectator and illustrated by Hugh Thomson. The book was apparently written by Sir Richard Steele, an Anglo-Irish writer, playwright, and politician, and Joseph Addison, an English essayist, poet, playwright, and politician. They were the founders of The Spectator magazine, hence the attribution. The book is amply illustrated by Hugh Thomson who was a favorite illustration to the leading British authors of the day. I counted over 60 items in the List of Illustrations. It is bound in dark blue boards with elaborate gilt decorations and titles on cover and spine; the page edges are gilt all-round. The book is protected by a clear plastic dust jacket although I doubt it is original. Condition: This book is in very good condition. The hard covers and clean and unbumped and the gilt bright on cover and spine. Inside there are some lightly penciled bookseller s marks on the first blank page and an inked gift inscription on the title page (what were they thinking!). I note some light and random foxing within but nothing too serious. The front hinge is cracked, the rear intact and the binding is tight and sound. This book is not ex-library or a remainder.

Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. Thomson, Hugh (illustrator). 1st edition of the Reprint from the Spectator - Very nice copy of the 1886 - Blue cloth with elaborate embossed pictorial on cover in bright gilt - all pages inside clean, tight and unmarked. Multiple illustrations by Thomson.
Cloth. Condition: Near Fine. Hugh Thomson (illustrator). An illustrated anthology of the Spectator's series on this archetypal English gentleman. An English squire of Queen Anne's reign, Sir Roger exemplified the values of an old country gentleman, and was portrayed as lovable but somewhat ridiculous ('rather beloved than esteemed') (Spectator no. 2), making his Tory politics seem harmless and silly. He was said to be the grandson of the man who invented the dance of the same name. The work was first published in 1886. This is the third edition. With scores of charming vignettes by Hugh Thomson, the celebrated pen and ink illustrator. This is one of the earliest works to feature his illustrations. Direct from the library of the late Hugh Selbourne MD (1906-1973) a noted book collector and diarist. In the original cloth. Externally very smart, with some light marking to the boards and fading to the spine. The lower quarter of the boards are also a little faded. With a shelf stamp to the front pastedown. The text block is untrimmed but the edges are clean. The front free endpaper is a little foxed. Internally, remarkably clean and bright throughout, and firmly bound. Near Fine. book.
