About this Item: Derby, Thomas Richardson and Son (and Dublin, for the Catholic Book Society) 1847., 1847. The interest of this volume is that the engraved illustrations for it were supplied by the younger Pugin (his responsibility for them is not indicated on the plates themselves, although they are obviously in Pugin?s manner, but is explicitly stated in a near contemporary printed catalogue issued by the volume?s Derby publisher). The volume has the additional bibliographical interest that this 1847 edition is not listed by Margaret Belcher in her 1987 bibliography of Pugin, and that it differs from an earlier 1846 edition, itself recorded by Belcher from the copy at Ushaw College only, in that its engraved title leaf is reworked, with a different image occupying the lower part of the plate, and that the frontispiece is not a Crucifixion scene (as reported by Belcher, her B23), but shows a priest in the act of elevating the Host. Hopefully these factors - the evident rarity of the volume either in this edition or in that of 1846, and the divergences of this edition from the edition of 1846 as recorded by Belcher - should reconcile prospective purchasers to the heavy ink stain to the upper margin of one plate and of neighbouring pages noted in the description given below, since the volume is in otherwise respectable condition. 12mo. 811 + (1)pp, engraved frontispiece, engraved title leaf, (10) engraved plates. Contemporary gilt-panelled morocco, gilt spine, rubbed at head and foot of spine, with IHS monogram in centre of upper and lower panels, all edges gilt, with attached contemporary brass clasp. Ink presentation inscription on preliminary blank leaf to Arundell de Pentheny O?Kelly from his mother, 27 January 1850. A heavy ink stain (not recent) on upper margin of pp 757-60 and of intervening plate, extending into top of engraved surface of plate and involving paper loss to top of pp 759-60 (the stain also affects the outer edge of the blank upper margin on neighbouring pages).
