About this Item: Antwerp: Hieronymous Cock, 1556., 1556. Single sheet, mounted and framed (6 x 9 inches). FINE engraving and etching, with transparent wash and body color, highlighted with gold and silver. Provenance: Signed "GM," most likely Georg Mack the Elder. First edition. EXTREMELY FINE engraving by Coornhert after Maarten van Heemskerck, ILLUMINATED and SIGNED by Georg Mack the Elder. Exhibited in "Painted Prints: The Revelation of Color in Northern Renaissance & Baroque Engravings, Etchings & Woodcuts," 2002, no. 42, at the Baltimore Museum of Art. Number 3 in a series of 12 engravings entitled "The Victories of Emperor Charles V." "In 1556 Hieronymus Cock published a series of 12 engravings, with a separate title page, on the theme of the victories of Emperor Charles V. The designs were by Maarten van Heemskerck, and the plates were cut by Dirck Volckertsz. Coornhert 'The victories of Charles V' exalts the mighty deeds of the emperor. The title page refers to the prints as 'images of paternal triumphs' ('paternarum victoriarum imagines'), and the dedication is to Charles's successor as Lord of the Netherlands, so the series may well have been intended to urge Philip to follow in his father's footsteps "The fall of Charles de Bourbon is the theme of the third print, with its caption: 'Bourbon is struck to the ground, and the imperial army storms the walls of Rome and plunders the wretched city.' A halberdier who has rushed to the scene can only look on in powerless dismay as Bourbon pitches backwards from the ladder placed against a tower-like structure that forms part of the city walls. Others are scaling a second ladder to his right, and the intensity of the battle in the city is visible on both sides of this section of the wall. The Tiber flows by on the left, with a curiously peaceful scene in the foreground showing two men returning from a watermill floating on the river, each burdened with a pitcher. "The composition of this print, with its odd tower-like construction in the center, looks somewhat contrived. Yet this particular print is astonishingly accurate from a topographical point of view. Cellini says that it was by the Campo Santo that he shot Bourbon. At that time the wall around the Vatican stopped at the banks of the Tiber, ending in a tower - the very one displayed in this engraving. The Tiber bends at this point, and the view to the north-west from the foot of the tower did indeed correspond with Heemskerck's drawing, which has, of course, been transmuted into its mirror-image in the engraving. From left to right, from the tower one can see the campanile of old St. Peter's and the church itself, then the obelisk that still stood to the south of the old basilica, with the new St. Peter's under construction. By 1534 only the four central pillars by Raphael and the arches from the dome resting on them had been built, as shown in the print. The round building is Santa Maria della Febbre, which belonged to the old St. Peter's complex. "Heemskerck was able to consult his own sketches for this print. His Rome sketchbooks contain a number of drawings of the area around St. Peter's. Not even the floating water-mill in the foreground was invented; it appears precisely as it is here in an anonymous pen drawing of ca. 1540 with a view of the castle of Sant'Angelo" (Rosier, "The victories of Charles V: a series of prints by Maarten van Heemskerck, 1555-56"). "The Nuremberg court records indicate that the Mack family - Hans, Georg the Elder, and Georg the Younger - were among the most active and important 'Briefmaler' and 'Illuministen' in the city in the late sixteenth and early seventeenth centuries. The family's output of painted prints was prodigious, and many of the most sumptuously colored engravings known today were executed by them. Their painted prints must also have been admired during their day, because they identified their work with monograms. The family members painted in a refined style, imitative of miniature painting and manuscript illumination, employi. Seller Inventory # 72MMS247

BACKGROUND: •The book of hours is a Christian devotional book popular in the Middle Ages. It is the most common type of surviving medieval illuminated manuscript. Like every manuscript, each manuscript book of hours is unique in one way or another, but most contain a similar collection of texts, prayers and psalms, often with appropriate decorations, for Christian devotion. Illumination or decoration is minimal in many examples, often restricted to decorated capital letters at the start of psalms and other prayers, but books made for wealthy patrons may be extremely lavish, with full-page miniatures. Books of hours were usually written in Latin. •Despite their strongly religious origin, the books served more as status symbols and fashion accessories than paths to heaven, a fact testified to in the large number of copies that survive in exceptional condition. Most Books of Hours are illuminated manuscripts, beautifully written out by hand on vellum, with ornate initial letters in each section, decorative page borders, and-in the better examples-delicate paintings, which are called miniatures. Condition: Near Fine. 1st Edition. 1492 FORESTI CHRONICLE Incunabula City View Woodcuts Illustrated ROME Venice An incredible COMPLETE illustrated 1492 edition of the Foresti Chonicle! At the end of the 15th-century, universal chronicles were popular amongst readers and authors alike. Because of their popularity, authors such as Jacob Philippus Foresti created their own editions and supplements to these chronicles. ‘Supplementum Chronicarum’ was such a work, intended to be a supplement to the more regular universal chronicle work. However, parting from the norm, Foresti discusses mythological creatures and characters as true, historical figures. He also notes the events of the Trojan War and makes record of Giovanni Carignano’s lost work on the Popes and their visits with Ethiopians. This example is filled with 45 woodcut illustrations and initials throughout. Item number: #3337 Price: $25,000 PHILIPPUS, Jacobus [Foresti] Opus preclarum Supplementum chronicarum vulgo appellatum. It also depicts Roman politics and way of life during the Roman Republic after the overthrow of Julius Caesar. This work is notably famous for being the third book ever printed and that “during the 15th-century, ‘De Officiis’ was the pinnacle of moral philosophy” (Baldwin, 590). This work was an important work in English schools through the start of the 18th-century and was a major influence on the works of John Locke. This extremely rare 1493 Pincius edition of the works of Cicero includes ‘De officiis,’ ‘De amicitia,’ ‘De senectute,’ and ‘Paradoxa.’ This printing is based on the 1482 Venice edition, and the Latin text is supplemented by commentary which surrounds the text on each page. About this Item: Venetiis: Bartholameu de Zanis de Portesio, 1493. [13 Nov. 1493]. First edition., 1493. Hardcover. Condition: Near Fine. 1st Edition. 1493 1ed INCUNABLE Martial Epigrams Roman Poetry Epigrammaton Corruption in Rome "I live in a little cell, with a window that won't even close, In which Boreas himself would not want to live." – Martial, Epigrams Martial was a 1st-century Roman poet from Spain most-known for his ‘Epigrams.’ This important, early piece of Roman literature expresses details of life in Rome focusing in on the brutal daily life during the Roman Empire. Martial describes living conditions of Rome, corrupt physicians and senators, cruel treatment of slaves, and secrets and rumors of emperors. Because of the style of Martial’s writing, he is often considered the first insult comic, as he used humor to disguise his disdain for the life with which he was so familiar. This 1493 incunabula printing of Martial’s works is not only a first edition, but it is one of the earliest printed editions of this work. It is complete with all 159 numbered leaves, each of which includes the text surrounded by the commentary of Georgius Merula. Merula was a well-known Italian classical scholar who published commentaries on Cicero, Plautus, Cato and Martial, which first appeared in 1471. About this Item: Alfred A. Knopf, New York, 1925. First edition in English preceding the British edition by three years of Mann's classic novel. Octavo, original cloth, patterned endpapers. Translated from the German by Kenneth Burke. Near fine in the rare original dust jacket with some light expert restoration to the crown of the spine. First editions are rare, especially in the original dust jacket. "Thomas Mann is one of the greatest and most widely read authors of the 20th century. An innovative stylist and synthesizer of the intellectual trends of his time, Mann exerted much influence on modern fiction not only in Germany but in Europe and in both Americas as well. His perceptiveness as an interpreter of Western cultural heritage and his skill as a cosmopolitan teacher of democratic and humanistic values earned him recognition as a 'mirror of his age' and a 'citizen of the world'. Among Mann's many well-written works of short fiction, "Death in Venice" (1928), a novella based on Mann's impressions during his stay in Venice, is the most famous. Typically for Mann, the novella deals with the problem of the unhappy, sick artist, Gustav von Aschenbach, who envies the healthy and 'normal' people of the bourgeois society" (Pribic, 262-3). Autograph Letter, Signed, Written to Joshua Hatheway: WAR OF 1812]:

About this Item: 1813. 1pp. Folio. Old fold lines. Some separation at folds; one tear closed with archival tape. Lightly soiled. Docketed on verso. Good. A dramatic battlefield letter from the Battle of Sackets Harbor, a key action in the War of 1812 An eyewitness account of the second battle of Sackett's Harbor, on the shores of Lake Ontario, written by the commander of the American forces there, Gen. Jacob Brown, to his friend Joshua Hatheway, Quartermaster General and formerly the commander of the defenses at Sackets Harbor. The town, situated near the entrance to the St. Lawrence River at the far eastern end of Lake Ontario and opposite the Canadian town of Kingston, was a vital defensive point for the Americans, challenging British control of the St. Lawrence and the lake, and preventing a British thrust into New York State. If either side could control both sides of the entrace to the St. Lawrence, they could control the Upper Great Lakes. Taking advantage of the American action against York, which drew troops away to the western end of the Lake, the British decided to strike. On the 28th of May, 1813, the British Great Lakes squadron under the command of James Yeo appeared off Sackets Harbor, carrying troops under the command of the Governor-General, Lieut. General George Prevost. Having been forewarned by several men who escaped the Battle of Henderson Bay the previous day, the Americans had some time to reinforce their defenses before the British could attack. The British landed on the 28th, but launched their main attack the next morning. They easily routed the American militia, but the regulars under Brown were able to fight off repeated attacks on their fortifications. Prevost, fearing the arrival of more American troops, ordered a retreat which nearly became a rout. Brown was the hero of the day, and was later rewarded with a comission as brigader general. He must have immediately written this letter describing the action: "Dr. Sir, I received an order some days since from Genl Dearborn to take comm. at this Post. Comd. Chauncey is up the lake. We were this morning attacked as day dawned by Sir George Prevost in person who made good his landing with at least a thousand picked men. Sir James Yeo commanded the fleet after loosing some distinguished officers and of course some gallant men. Our loss is very severe as to the quality of those who have fallen. The enemy left many of their wounded on the Field - but I have no doubt carried off many more. We shall probably be again attacked as Sir George must feel very sore. All I can say is, whatever may be the result we will not be disgraced." A superb battlefield letter reporting on one of the most significant military actions of the War of 1812. About this Item: Boussod Valadon & Co, successors to Goupil & Co, New York, Paris, London and The Hague, 1890. Photogravure, coloured by hand, by Goupil & Co., after Stull. A fine hand-coloured portrait of a filly whose prize money totalled $112,471 between 1886 and 1891. She won 47 of her 82 starts during this period. "Firenze was a small filly bred by Dan Swigert in 1884. She was sired by Glenelg out of the mare Florida, by Virgil. James Ben Ali Haggin purchased Firenze for $2,600. Small in stature, she grew to only 15 hands, but her racing presence was large. At 3 Firenze won all the major stakes for fillies and at 4, 5, and 6 she was named Champion Handicap Female. As champion filly or mare for four consecutive years, Firenze raced against colts 69 times and beat them regularly over all distances. She beat the mighty Hanover at 1 1/4, 1 1/2, and 1 3/4 miles; beat Kingston twice, and gave The Bard his only defeat of 1888. Rider, trainer, racing official, and Hall of Fame member James McLaughlin knew such great fillies as Miss Woodford, Imp, Beldame, Artful, Pan Zareta, and Regret, but claimed that Firenze was the best of all." Therefore, Pope Pius sued to call him ‘the godly Mary.’ – Platina, Lives. Originally printed in 1479, Bartolomeo Sacchi’s Lives of the Popes, was one of the first works published on the history of the popes of the Catholic Church. It quickly became the standard reference work on papal history. About this Item: Basiliae : Froben et Episcopius, 1551., 1551. Hardcover. Condition: Near Fine. 1st Edition. 1551 Juvenal & Persius SATIRES Froben HUGE FOLIOS Curio Stoic Philosophy ROME “Many commit the same crime with a very different result. One bears a cross for his crime; another a crown.” Juvenal, The Satires A rare 1551 printing of ‘The Satires’ of Juvenal and Persius printed by Froben. This collection of satirical poetry was written in the late 1st and 2nd centuries. These satires discuss society, social norms, irony, each of these providing insight to the morals and values of Roman life at the time. Juvenal outlines many of the concerns he has with Roman citizens including unfaithfulness and greed; issues he recognized as downfalls to society. This edition features the commentary of numerous 16th-century scholars including Britannico, Baden, and Plautius. However, the most notable name to contribute to this edition was Curio. According to Dibdin, “This edition, printed by one of Froben's sons, is noticed by Ruperti as containing the Scholia of Curio. Henninius, in his edition of 1685, more particularly discusses the Scholia of Curio, and the merits of Britannicus. This edition of 1551 is scarce.” Item number: #2524 Price: $2500 JUVENALIS, (Decimus Junius) Ivnii Ivvenalis, et A. In 1878, 40 "crusaders" (some accompanied by family members) of the Allegheny Commandery, No. 35, Knights Templar began a grand tour "pilgrimage" to Europe. The basic tour, which cost $500 in gold, was to last 75 days, although individuals could extend their tour to 106 days by adding a visit to "the principal Italian cities" for an additional $140. The tours included all lodging and first-class passage on Cunard Line steamships. James Rafferty chose the 106 day tour which is detailed in a Thomas Cook itinerary affixed to the first page of the album. The $640 he spent in 1878 is the equivalent of over $15,000 in 2017 dollars. The exceptionally wide variety of ephemera collected by Rafferty is for the most part mounted in chronological sequence. In addition to many visually stunning ephemeral items, Rafferty also mounted long and detailed accounts of the tour that were regularly published in a local newspaper. The last few leaves in the album contain related materials collected after the trip including a cabinet card photo of Rafferty and two obituaries from 1891 (he died at age 37) identifying him as a Pennsylvania "Capitalist" who had been residing in San Diego, California. Be sure to visit the on-line listing of this album and view images of many of the album pages. A fascinating testament to the wealth associated with Allegheny, Pennsylvania in the last quarter of the 19th-century. At the time it was one of the richest cities in the United State and the home to more millionaires than any other city in the world. About this Item: Franckfurt am Main : Matth. Merianum, 1674., 1674. Hardcover. Condition: Near Fine. 1st Edition. 1674 Gottfried Historical Chronica Creation Persia ROME Merian Illustrated War Johann Ludwig Gottfried was an early 17th-century German theologian and author. He is most remembered for his monumental work ‘Historical Chronical.’ While he also edited and paraphrased important works such as Ovid’s ‘Metamorphoses,’ ‘Chronicle’ was by far his most extensive and time consuming piece. In fact, each portion was so popular at release that the work was continued beyond Gottfried’s death by Abelin. ‘Chronica’ was the most comprehensive book of world events which included human history fused with ancient myths which were encompassed within the timeline of the Bible. Gottfried sought to combine pagan histories with holy and divine histories and did so beginning with Creation, touching on important kingdoms – Assyria, Persia, Macedonia, and Rome. The introduction by Gottfried himself states how his intention was to distinguish history from stories: “Because in all histories, sacred and secular, the accurate and specific listing of dates and years is very important, without which histories are as if lifeless and become like fables thus I have sought to do my best in this matter so that readers may know properly in which year each story took place.” (Varwig 2) This work is beautifully illustrated with incredible plates by Merian, which the Gentleman’s Magazine refers to as ‘the most remarkable transactions in the world.’ Illustrations include Adam and Even in the Garden of Eden, battle scenes with self-mutilation and suicide, a city view of Ostend, varieties of birds from around the world, and a map of the known world.
