A comprehensive collectionBorn in Morning Sun, Iowa, Roberts had a troubled family life as a boy, and left school in the ninth grade. He worked at a great variety of jobs all around the United States, and eventually chose the investment industry for his career.[1] He served as Chairman of Augusta National Golf Club from 1931 through 1976, and was named "Chairman in Memoriam" after his death. He also served as Chairman of the Masters Tournament from 1934 through 1976.An investment banker on Wall Street from the late 1920s, Roberts was a partner with Reynolds & Company. He was the co-founder with Bobby Jones of the Augusta National Golf Club. In the early years, he and Jones personally extended invitations to the tournament. Roberts' friendship with American president Dwight Eisenhower led to the Eisenhowers making Augusta National their retreat during the 1950s.Roberts was sometimes described as a 'benevolent dictator'. Roberts received many awards and honors during his lifetime, including service on the PGA Advisory Committee from its inception in 1943 until his death, appointment by the United States Golf Association to serve on the Bob Jones Award Selection Committee, and election to the World Golf Hall of Fame in 1978. He was the author of The Story of the Augusta National Golf Club, published in 1976, and a subject of a book titled, The Making of the Masters, Clifford Roberts, Augusta National, and Golf's Most Prestigious Tournament, by David Owen, published in 1999.It was not until 1975 that Lee Elder became the first black golfer to play in the Masters Tournament (although he was not the first non-white golfer to compete; Sukree Onsham of Thailand played in 1970 and 1971). Roberts is quoted as saying "to make an exception would be practicing discrimination in reverse." Lee Elder later said, "I don't want anything special. I will make it on my own." Another comment attributed to Roberts is: "As long as I'm alive, all the golfers will be white and all the caddies will be black."[2] [3]Roberts, age 84, committed suicide by gunshot in 1977 on the banks of the par-3 course at Augusta National. He had been in ill health for several months. Seller Inventory # 264204

About this Item: 1959. First Edition. "KLEIN, William. Rome: The City and Its People. Paris: Editions du Seuil, (1959). Tall quarto, original black cloth, photographic endpapers, original photographic dust jacket. $7000.First edition, French issue, the second volume in Klein’s acclaimed series of four "city" books, a distinctive association copy inscribed on the page before the title page to longtime friend, fellow photographer Peter Turnley, "To Peter, ROME SWEET ROME, en toute amitié, William [line drawn] William Klein Paris 2005," with over 130 vivid, high-contrast heliogravures (many double-page), scarce in original dust jacket.According to Fellini, "this is the best Rome there is and Klein is the best photographer there is. He knows Rome like a book and this is it." "Cheesy, delirious, pure Pop art," William Klein's Rome continues the "raw, kinetic and utterly original" innovations of Life is Good (1956) (Roth, 140-41). His genius resides in an unerring ability to remind "us that much great, serious art is often about play, achieved simply by experimenting with the possibilities of the material. Forget trance and witness-the revels are the thing" (Parr & Badger I:243). Rome is the second volume in Klein's "city" series, "four books of photography which shook the very roots of this medium's young tradition filled with raw, grainy, swirling yet abrupt images, which visually describe these cities in a manner never previously seen before" (Christian Sciene Monitor). First edition, French issue; London, New York and Rome editions published same year. Text in French. Open Book, 178. See Icons of Photography, 120. This rare association copy is from the collection of Peter Turnley, renowned photographer for Newsweek and contributing editor for Harper's Magazine who has covered "almost every important international news event of the last 15 years" (New York Times). Warmly inscribed by Klein in Paris, where both photographers are based.Images clean and fresh, front inner paper hinge starting but sound; some chipping with loss to edges of bright, unrestored dust jacket. An exceptional association copy in extremely good condition.". Signed. Seller Inventory # 60316

About this Item: Alfred A. Knopf, New York, 1925. First edition in English preceding the British edition by three years of Mann's classic novel. Octavo, original cloth, patterned endpapers. Translated from the German by Kenneth Burke. Near fine in the rare original dust jacket with some light expert restoration to the crown of the spine. First editions are rare, especially in the original dust jacket. "Thomas Mann is one of the greatest and most widely read authors of the 20th century. An innovative stylist and synthesizer of the intellectual trends of his time, Mann exerted much influence on modern fiction not only in Germany but in Europe and in both Americas as well. His perceptiveness as an interpreter of Western cultural heritage and his skill as a cosmopolitan teacher of democratic and humanistic values earned him recognition as a 'mirror of his age' and a 'citizen of the world'. Among Mann's many well-written works of short fiction, "Death in Venice" (1928), a novella based on Mann's impressions during his stay in Venice, is the most famous. Typically for Mann, the novella deals with the problem of the unhappy, sick artist, Gustav von Aschenbach, who envies the healthy and 'normal' people of the bourgeois society" (Pribic, 262-3). About this Item: Enitharmon, 2009. Hardcover. Condition: As New. Dust Jacket Condition: As New. Limited Edition. Signed and numbered by the artist from an edition of 75 including a limited edition print signed and numbered also. Peter Blake, founding father of British Pop Art, has been producing quirky and inventive collages since the mid-1950s, when he was in his early twenties. His Venice Fantasies, made in his mid-seventies with the same lightness of touch and fresh eye that has distinguished all his work, are marked by his characteristic wry humour and unerring sense of the absurd. Each of the 21 images takes as its starting-point a photographic view of Venice from the early 1900s which was part of a concertina set of tourist postcards. This slipcased de luxe edition of Venice Fantasies consists of 75 signed and numbered copies. Each copy is accompanied by a signed and numbered original silkscreen print by Peter Blake entitled Mickey’s Birthday Party. As New Condition. Signed by Illustrator(s). About this Item: Lerici, Roma, 1959. Prima e unica edizione. Direzione grafica di Giulio Confalonieri e Ilio Negri, schema di impaginazione di Giuseppe Trevisani. At the time he made Milano Carrieri was associated with the italian neo-realist photographers, such as Cesare Columbo and Mario di Biasi, before he went on to become a distinguished photographer of sculpture. He made books of other cities, but none this extreme. Its concentration on the seamier side of life makes Milano one of the most important works of the neorealist tendency of the 1950s (Parr / Badger). Volevo produrre una città non riprodurla. Niente battute fotografiche. Niente formalismo. Niente inchieste. Parr / Badger, The Photobook: A History, I, p. 214. Italiano. About this Item: Rilegato. Condition: nuovo. sovraccoperta. L'ERMA di BRETSCHNEIDER, 2014. Rilegato con sovraccoperta. 984pp, 277 ill. Col. The research on The Eastern Part of the Mons Oppius in Rome presented here has been conducted since March 1981 in close cooperation with the Musei Capitolini, the Sovraintendenza ai Beni Culturali of the Comune di Roma, now Roma Capitale, and other partners. It deals with the part of the Esquiline which in antiquity was occupied by a number of sanctuaries and the adjacent Horti of Maecenas. Since her first publication 30 years ago, the author has studied the archaeological finds from this area in depth, but in order to understand their historical contexts it became necessary to consider the topography of a much wider area. The results therefore include contributions to the `Esquiline Venus, to the bust of Commodus as Hercules Romanus (both Roma, Musei Capitolini), and the dating of the `Esquiline Group (Copenhagen, Ny Carlsberg Glyptotek), as well as a reconstruction of the Servian city wall between the `Auditorium of Maecenas and the Porta Capena. The accompanying maps, drawn by the author, are based on the photogrammetric data of Roma Capitale which were generously provided by the Sovraintendente ai Beni Culturali of Roma Capitale. After a chapter on the methodological approach, the text is divided into two parts: Topography and excavations, with a topographical survey of the research area, and Discussion of selected archaeological finds. Table of contents Eugenio La Rocca, Prefazione Acknowledgements and Introduction Abbreviations IllustrationS ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS Methodological approach I.
