About this Item: Berhard Tauchnitz, Leipzig, 1863. Fine Binding. Condition: Fine. First Thus. ROMOLA George Eliot Copyright Edition Bernhard Tauchnitz, Leipzig. 1863 First Thus. Vol One 328pp, Vol Two 310pp Fine Binding. This handsome set is in a bespoke binding of three quarter vellum to marbled paper covered boards. There is ornate gilt decoration to five panels on the spine with the title in a red panel to the second compartment and the volume to a red panel to the fourth. There are red speckles to the page edges all round. The text blocks are unmarked, tight, white, bright and square and the volumes appear unread. Romola was George Eliot's fourth novel set in the 15th century and was at the time considered by many, including the author herself, her finest to date. Tauchnitz was the name of a family of German printers and publishers. They published English language literature for distribution on the European continent outside Great Britain, including initial serial publications of novels by Charles Dickens. Though copyright protection did not exist between nations in the 19th century, Tauchnitz paid the authors for the works they published, and agreed to limit their sales of English-language books to the European continent. About this Item: Bernhard Tauchnitz, Leipzig, 1863. Vellum. Condition: Near Fine. 12mo - over 6¾. Book. Decorated vullum, with title and fleur-de-lys on boards and Renaissance diaper ornamentation elsewhere and on spine, both volumes housed in a red cloth slipcase. Eliot's historical novel of Medici Florence is illustrated with albumen photo plates. Near fine. Vellum and its decoration bright. Slipcase has some wear, with minor separation of part of one edge, and sunning to some of cloth. Both volumes tight, and pages generally clean. Photo plates tend to have a little warping, which is probabaly function of paper used, and just a few of the early text pages in volume one mimic to a lesser degree the waviness. Otherwise, fine. About this Item: Leipzig Berhard Tauchnitz [Copyright Edition] 1863. (George Eliot's "Romola", first appeared in the Cornhill Magazine, in 1863). Ca. 1880-90., 1880. Hardcover. Condition: Fine. No Jacket. Two volumes; 4 1/2 in. x 6 1/4 in x 1 1/8 in. (thick), frontispieces is a photographic view of Florence; printed title-page with the copyright date of "Romola": 1863. [i]-vi, pp. 1-328; Volume 2: architectural photographic frontispiece (S. Miniale), printed title-page. [i]-vi, pp. 1-310. Each volume contains 15, mounted photographic illustrations printed in brown tones, a total of 30 plates, mounted on blank paper sheets. These are quite similar to the "views" that were also used in early postcards, and view books sold to tourists. Most bear series numbers, but are not in numerical order; some have the original publisher's name: Edizioni Brogi; most have printed titling. Bound in vellum with the titling & gilt decorations on the spines, gilt & red borders on the covers, with titles and fleur-di-lis designs on the front covers; gold & brown floral-design endpapers, headbands, all edges stained red, volume one shows a red silk bookmarker bound in. Vellum spines show some darkening, dusting to covers. Age-related tanning to page and photo-illustration margins, with some small buckling to pasted on photo-illustrations; one inch cracks to upper front outer hinges of covers. Inscription in ink on the first front flyleaves: Helen B. Alexander Akron Ohio May 29, 1890. These are the types of photo-illustrated volumes sold to English-speaking tourists in Italy during the 1880-1910 period. Tauchnitz also produced other Italian-themed titles by Hawthorne, etc. Interesting source for how some of the sites appeared in the late 19th century. List of views in this set: Volume 1: [1] (View of Florence), untitled frontispiece; [2] 3037 Palazzo Pitti; [3] 1535 Dante (Giotto); [4] 5418 Piazza del Mercato Vecchio; [5] 3018 Campanile di Giotto; [6] 3094 Porta del Paradiso (Ghiberti); [7] 3048 Palazzo Strozzi (Bendetto da Majano); [8] 3022 Chiesa di S.
