About this Item: Firmin Didot, Paris, 1824. Stipple engraving printed in black, after Redouté, printed by Rémond. Very good condition apart from some overall light soiling and a small loss in the left margin. A rare uncoloured impression from the first edition of 'Les Roses': Redouté's most famous work, and perhaps the most celebrated flower book of all time. Pierre-Joseph Redouté, the most successful flower painter of all time, produced a work that was not only of great artistic merit, but also formed an invaluable scientific recordl. Redouté described and figured almost all the important roses known in his day, and included were many of the ancestors of today's roses. "The plates in 'Les Roses' have artistic value, botanical and documentary value, both for the species and cultivars still surviving and for those that have disappeared' (Gisele de la Roche). The roses used as specimens for the work were taken from the collections of Thory, the Malmaison gardens, and from other collections around Paris. Many of the flowers were novelties in Redouté's time, and a number were dedicated to the memory of his friends and acquaintances, such as l'Héritier de Brutelle and Ventenat. The plates of 'Les Roses' were executed by means of stipple engraving, a method ideally suited to render the nuances of tone found in Redouté's original water-colours. During a trip to London, he met the renowned engraver Francesco Bartolozzi and learned that the most successful impressions of stipple engravings came from well-used plates. Redouté's printers therefore struck a limited number of black plates to take the edge off the plate before printing in colours. This print was printed in black on ochre-tinted paper. The ochre tint has subsequently been removed to reveal Redouté's full mastery of the stipple-engraving technique that this image so effortlessly demonstrates. Cf. Cleveland Collections 807; cf. Dunthorne p 232; cf. Hunt, Redoutéana 19; Hunt, Printmaking in the Service of Botany 25; Nissen BBI 1599; Pritzel 7455; Ray, French 89; Stafleu & Cowan TL2 8747. Seller Inventory # 9321

About this Item: Guillaume Rouille, Lyon, 1549. Vellum. Condition: Very Good. Pierre Eskrich (illustrator). First Spanish Edition. Collation: One blank, original front endpaper, A - Q 8; R4 (Table of Contents followed by 2 very scarce original blank endpapers). pp (1) 2-256. (Misnumbering p.245 as 145, 248 as 226.) Translated by Bernardino Daza with a new set of woodcuts commisioned, attributed to Pierre Eskich. Contains all 210 emblems lacking from the orignial 212,"Adversus naturam peccantes" #80 & "Doctorum agnomina" #97, considered inappropriate. ( I have photocopies of these 2 illustrations & text laid in). All emblems start on a new page with highly elaborate frames. Unlike previous editions, the emblems are presented in 2 books. Translator Daza claimed to have access to a printed copy with corrections in Alciato's own hand. The contents of this volume are tight & strong. The paper is slightly age-toned; there is a round water-stain that discolored only the last 10-12 pages. At the bottom of the title page, in the margin is written in an old hand "Delli Amici di Baccio Baccelli ", otherwise the text is clean & free of any writing. Baccelli was a founding member of the Accademia Fiorentina, which promoted the use of Italian for official purposes rather than Latin. Spanish was then also considered a "vulgar" language. Unfortunately, the outside margins have been trimmed (c. 1/4") which is enough to have cut off part of the margin captions on many but not all of them. The full vellum binding (could well be the original) is only slightly soiled & is appropriate to its age. Very minor shelf wear, strong corners. Gold stamped, brown leather spine label has a chipped top corner, else very good. In remarkable condition for its age and rarity. From Rafael Zafra"s work on the subject: "In 1549, Bernardino Daza Pinciano translated into Spanish one of the most influential books of European Renaissance and Baroque culture. For this transaltion, the author not only utilized one of the finest engravings crafted for it to date, but he also included ten new emblems here, with the text in Spanish, before they were ever published in the original Latin. The importance of this book, therefore, extends beyond the domain of Spanish culture. Nevertheless, in spite of its importance, Daza's unique edition was never republished in its entirety and without alterations. And it is not possible to overemphasize the influence of this work . over the course of practically 200 years." Please "Ask Bookseller" if this is available before ordering & request photos of this scarce volume. Size: 8vo. Seller Inventory # 2299

About this Item: Couverture rigide. Condition: Bon. Edition originale. In 8 de 283pp, (13)pp. n. ch. Seller Inventory # ABE-1530429673672
