About this Item: SB 45pp,portrait ,map , 2004 N&MP Reprint of 1919 Original EditionPublished Price £7.50 The 5th Battalion of the Royal Irish Fusiliers formed part of the 10th (Irish) Division raised at the outbreak of the Great War in response to KitchenerÕs call for volunteers. This very concise history relates the battalionÕs exploits which began at Gallipoli in July 1915. After a hard mauling in this doomed campaign, the battalion recuperated on the Greek island of Lemnos before being hurled into yet another forlorn enterprise : the attempt to save Serbia from being overrun. The unitÕs two years in the Balkans ended on the Macedonian front, to which they bid farewell in the autumn of 1916, with memories Ôchiefly composed of hardship, disease and ennuiÕ. The battalionÕs next port of call was the Palestine campaign of 1917-18, exchanging mountain warfare for the desert. In Palestine the Battalion at last tasted victory against the Turks, helping to drive them from the Gaza-Bethsheba line and deep into the hills of Judea. The battalion finally embarked for France in May 1918. After a well-deserved spell of leave, and despite enduring its first gas attack, the battalion joined the pursuit of the Germans across the River Scheldt in the final weeks of the war. About this Item: 2002 N & M Press reprint (original pub1922). SB. xiv + 436pp with 21 b/w ilus and four mapsPublished Price £14.95 The Royal Fusiliers (7th Foot) was one of five infantry of the line regiments to have four regular battalions (all the others had two each) and two Special Reserve, numbered 1 to 6. In addition the RF had an Extra Reserve battalion, the 7th. By the end of the war the number of battalions had risen to 44, and in the first half of 1919 a further two battalions (45 and 46 ) were raised for service in North Russia. The regiment did not have its own Territorial battalions but the first four battalions of the London Regiment were affiliated and included Ô(Royal Fusiliers)Õ as part of their full title. These in turn raised 2nd, 3rd and 4th line duplicate battalions. Leaving aside the London Regiment battalions this history quotes an estimated 195,000 as having served in the RF (more than the whole of the original BEF); if the Londons are included the total rises to 235,476. They fought in every theatre of war except Mesopotamia and 15,600 died. 80 Battle Honours and 12 VCs were awarded (JamesÕs ÔBritish Regiments 1914-1918). The first two VCs of the Great War were awarded to Lieut M Dease (posthumous) and Pte S Godley, both of the 4th Battalion, both at Mons on 23 August 1914.To cover so many battalions in detail in a single volume is hardly practical, but the author has managed a fair compromise. He has set out to deal with every significant engagement as correctly and completely as possible, while singling out incidents he judges worthy of note. He does not devote separate chapters or sections to each battalion but lets the story unroll, bringing in the battalions as they appear on the scene. There are separate chapters on Gallipoli, Salonika and East Africa; the rest of the book is concerned with the Western Front. His sources are the battalion diaries, personal diaries of officers, special accounts of particular actions contributed by soldiers actually involved, letters and conversations. The opening chapter is of particular interest because here the author explains in some detail how the regiment expanded and how each wartime battalion came to be formed. The appendix gives the Roll of Honour of officers (1054 names); a table showing the numbers of Warrant Officers, NCOs and Men on the Roll of Honour, by battalions; a table summarising decorations awarded, including foreign awards; brief biographies or notes on a number of RF general ranking officers; and several accounts of soldiers who took part in the various operations. There is a good, 24-page index. Seller Inventory # 6021

About this Item: 2003 N & M Press reprint (original pub 1925). SB.188pp with 12 b/w photos and 11 mapsPublished Price £18 ÒFaugh-a-BallaghÓ (Clear the Way) was the motto of the Royal Irish Fusiliers and the regiment was known as ÔThe FogsÕ or the ÔFaugh-a-BallaghsÕ; its depot was in Armagh, Northern Ireland. This is a rare history, not only because today it is rarely seen and hard to come by, but also because there are very few single volume Great War histories devoted to just the one (regular) battalion, and this is such a history - the story of the 1st Battalion The Royal Irish Fusiliers. In his War Books Cyril Falls comments: ÒThis is how the history of units in the Great War should be written, if units can afford it,Ó At the outbreak of war the 1st Battalion was in Shorncliffe, part of 10th Brigade, 4th Division and it went to France with the division in August 1914, arriving just in time to fight the Battle of Le Cateau on the 26th. The battalion fought on the Western Front for the rest of the war, transferring to the 36th (Ulster) Division in August 1917, and remaining with that division till the armistice. The narrative concludes in 1922 when the 1st and 2nd Battalions were amalgamated. This is a very good history, supported by good, clear maps and interesting contemporary photos, and there is plenty of detail which would hardly have been possible in a multi-battalion history. The author has arranged the narrative on a year by year basis with a chapter to each year and the actions, battles and other events taking place in each year arranged chronologically. Appendices include the nominal roll of officers who served with the battalion in the field between 23rd August 1914 and 11th November 1918, showing the approximate dates of joining, distinguishing those of the original battalion and identifying the dead and wounded. Of the 269 officers who served 69 gave their lives, or 1 in 4. The other ranks roll of honour is taken from ÒSoldiers DiedÓ. The list of honours and awards, headed by the VC won by Pte R.Morrow, gives citations for that VC and for the awards of the DSO and DCM, in alphabetical order with the London Gazette date; all the other awards are listed by name only, mention in despatches are not included though foreign decorations are. A very informative appendix on strength figures shows that 7,601 warrant officers, non-commissioned officers and men served with the battalion and of these 1,051 died. Seller Inventory # 6687
