Condition: Very Good. 1st Printing. 424 pages, ribbed dark brown leather spine and leather corners on the covers with brown cloth on the covers and marble end papers. Square and solid with wear on the edges of the covers, small bumps on the corners of the back cover, and the covers show light wear. Book plate on the inside front cover and the previous owner's gift inscription on the back of the front free end paper in fountain pen ink and dated 1877, and another owner's name on top of the next page. There is a very small amount of underlining and margin marks in pencil inside. 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. Seller Inventory # 5239

Full brown period calf, spines with raised bands and tooling in blind; marbled edges and endpapers (frontis foxed; some occasional foxing to text; lacking spine labels; some rubbing to spines and edges of boards; front upper joint of "Dying" is just over half detatched; other joints rubbed but servicable; bookplates in each volume of 'The Society of St. John the Evangelist', but no other markings. Each volume includes elaborate title pages in red and black including printer's devices. Jeremy Taylor (1613 - August 13, 1667) was a clergyman in the Church of England who achieved fame as an author during The Protectorate of Oliver Cromwell. He is sometimes known as the "Shakespeare of Divines" for his poetic style of writing. These two works were first issued in 1650-51. Mylar jackets supplied. Seller Inventory # L070541

About this Item: William Pickering, London, 1847. First edition thus. Sumptuously bound full blue crushed morocco binding by Peter Verburg, signed with his characteristic monogram on rear dentelle. A graceful binding with encircling leaf and bloom design between concentric rules and inlaid in the petals with turquoise morocco on cover and spine. Rear cover and dentelles with gilt ruling. Peter Verburg, a pupil of the famed Ellen Gates Starr in Chicago, was an accomplished Chicago bookbinder who studied for some time under Douglas Cockerell at Hull House in Chicago, and then later by Ralph Randolph Adsms at his bindery in New York. Verburg later went on to become the director of the bindery at the Merrymount Press under D. B. Updike. A beautiful example of Verburg's work. Engraved frontispiece, rubricated title page.
