About this Item: Doubleday, Doran, Garden City, New York, 1932. Hardcover. First US printing. Octavo, red decorated spine with black panel, black cloth, red endpapers, red top page edges. Spine sunned to tan, as usual, faint sunning to top margin of covers, fore edges yellowed, private bookplate at front, else a VG clean, tight and unworn copy, red top page edges bright, in a very fine facsimile dust jacket. >>> Greene's third novel and fourth book. A commercial failure (like the 1931 UK edition) it sold only 1018 copies, accounting for it being one of Greene's scarcest novels in first edition. This copy, like that described in Wobbe A4b, has a cancel title leaf. Reason unknown to me; it is not made from British sheets. In Greene's view, the novel was also an artistic failure which he disliked very much ("of a badness beyond the power of criticism" ) and forbade it's reprinting, a prohibition which his estate must honour until 2061. Thus, to own a copy of this book, it is a first edition or nothing. Seller Inventory # 46011
