About this Item: Printed for the author, 200 Mulberry-street, New York, 1855. Hardcover. Condition: Very Good+. First Edition; First Printing. 160 pages; Publisher's brown cloth, flat spine lettered in gilt, front and rear covers with blind stamped decorative frame-pattern. Pale yellow endpapers -- the front free endpaper is printed with another title page, repeating the wood-engraved harp vignette from the letterpress title page found within, but with an added decorative border, and multiple imprints for agents in the following cities: Portland, Maine: Sanborn & Carter; Boston: J.P. Magee; Philadelphia: Higgins & Perkinpine; Pittsburgh: J. L. Read -- "And Booksellers generallly." Very nearly fine, showing just a trace of light rubbing at the tips of the corners and bottom of the spine -- but tight and clean, inside and out. This splendidly preserved copy retains this interesting feature -- a thin, and delicate pale yellow endpaper printed with the text as set up for the front wrapper of the usual issue of copies which the author hoped to sell in large numbers throughout the eastern United States in the years just before the Civil War. On the verso of this fragile wrapper/title there is an Index of Tunes. There is a two-page Preface from the author, outlining five features she hoped would separate her offering from other hymnbooks intended for the young: [Musical examples with full five staves, clefs, key and time signatures, but printed compactly, offering room for many more musical examples than usual; There are several illustrations throughout, wood-engravings; Some of the music and much of the poetry is original, or specifically arranged for this work]. The following four pages contain the "Elements of Vocal Music" -- a remarkably compressed set of instructions in musical notation, the arrangement on the staff, clef, repeat signs, etc. This is followed by a two-page "Short Letter to the Children, who sing the songs in Linden Harp." Next, a leaf with an illustration depicting a lad with two companions, offering a copy of which purports to be this book, to a thoughtful-looking adult. There is a special song, with twelve verses below ("Air -- "Will you come to the bower?" - see page 16). It is a musical sales pitch! "O, see this Linden Harp, / 'Twas just left at our door! / A prettier music-book, / I never saw before. / Will you, will you, will you, will you, / buy a Linden Harp?" We have seen many books intended to be sold by subscription. especially from the nineteenth century, but I cannot recall another which includes an illustrated, musical pitch for itself. On the following leaf, the pitch continues, with an "Advertisement" "We offer no recommendation for the present work because we believe that it will recommend itself, and the book is put at a price which will enable all to examine and judge for themselves." There follow several paragraphs making exactly those specific recommendations -- to Superintendents, Teachers, Parents, and all others. "160 PAGES. PRICE 25 CENTS. With usual discount to the trade." Underneath this, there are specific breakdowns of the prices for postage, multiple copies, and discounts for Clergymen and teachers, and bulk purchases by Charity schools. "A number of active, enterprising Agents wanted." The bottom of this leaf has the author's agent identified: "C. M. Thayer, Middletown, Conn." Indeed, there are copies of "Linden Harp" recorded, dated a year after our copy (1856) and with Middletown and Thayer as the imprint. There are several institutional holdings recorded under a couple of OCLC numbers -- but only one copy which seems to match all the features of ours, bound in cloth, but with a plausible upper wrapper used as an endpaper: [UCLA -- YRL Special Collections CBCCall Number: CBC M1999 .L642l 1855]. The contents do seem unusually contemporary for a mid-century hymn book intended for children: "George W. Bethune - Come, let us sing of Jesus, While hearts and accents blend, #54; Thomas Bilby - Here we suffer grief and pain; Here we meet to part again, #65; Horatius Bonar - Preserved by thine almighty power, #81; John Burton - N.
