First Edition
First edition thus. 8vo. 478, (2, blank), xlviii pp. Hills American Bible 567: "Edited by the publisher. This is the first appearance of the Alexander Campbell Version of the New Testament which has been in print for over a century. Campbell (1788-1866) . came to America in 1809 as a Presbyterian minister, but soon became a Baptist and later founded the Disciples of Christ . although Campbell substituted some ornate words of Latin derivation for the ordinary words of common use, undue colloquialism in a modern (19th century) speech version would have been less desirable. He was particularly concerned with the Greek readings considered spurious and the handling of these constitute important differences between later editions. In the first and second editions they are printed in italics, but in the third most are removed to an appendix and the others printed in regular type." McMurtrie 44. American Imprints Inventory 75. Rather widely held in research libraries (OCLC locates 36 copies), but apparently and oddly missing from most of the major southern institutions. 1827 ownership signature on front endpaper, some signatures very heavily browned, persistent foxing, a good solid copy of an important southern ante-bellum edition of the New Testament. Contemporary calf (rubbed, corners bumped), leather spine label. (#8254).
