About this Item: 1986. First Edition. SALGADO, Sebastião. Sahel. L’Homme en detresse [Sahel. Humanity in Despair]. [Paris]: Prisma Press Pour Médecins sans Frontièrs, (1986). Folio, original stiff photographic wrappers. $3500.First edition of Salgado’s profound photobook on famine in Africa, a rare association copy presented by Salgado to fellow photographer Ralph Gibson, who founded the maverick Lustrum Press, inscribed on the title page, "A Ralph Gibson, ces images de cette Afrique muertrie, amicalement. S. Salgado" [To Ralph Gibson, these images of this murderous death in Africa, with friendship], with over 95 compelling photogravures (many double-page)."Sebastião Salgado spent 15 months in the parched region south of the Sahara photographing starving refugees with a 35-mm. Leica." The result of a 15-month collaboration with Médecins sans Frontières (Doctors Without Borders) and rejected for almost 20 years by American publishers who said "no one would buy the book because of the subject matter," this is the scarce 1986 first edition of Sahel, with text in French. For Salgado’s deeply affecting images of "the effects of starvation sweeping across Africa" and his lifelong humanitarian work, the Brazilian-born photographer was appointed UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador in 2001 (New York Times). Introduction by Jean LaCourture; text by Xavier Emmanuelli. Published only in wrappers. Tiny numbered label to rear wrapper. Text in French. Warmly inscribed to Ralph Gibson, renowned photographer and publisher of the groundbreaking Lustrum Press, which opened new avenues to photographers such as Robert Frank and Larry Clark that "helped to define a counterculture movement in photography" (Roth, 28).Interior fine, very lightest edge-wear to original wrappers, joints expertly reinforced. A striking copy with an exceptional provenance. Signed. Seller Inventory # 64002
