About this Item: The Century Company, New York, 1901. Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. No Jacket. Thomas Fogarty and George Varian (illustrator). Dark green boards with silver, black and coral pictorial on front, coral printing on front and spine. Mild rubbing to some edges, rubbing to front edge of spine and spine ends. Corners of top and bottom spine ends rubbed. Board corners bumped. Some light surface rubbing to back board. PO name on inside front paste down. On ffep there are two paste downs (they appear to be paper) with writing in pencil. The top one says,"For Madam Mountford" and the lower one says," With Compts of Capt. Slocum, The Spray". This signature has been authenticated by Joshua Slocum's great-grandson, Ralph Slocum. Research shows that Madame Mountford (who has an interesting history involving a relationship with the Mormons) spoke at the Pan-American Exposition of 1901 in Buffalo, NY and that Slocum was also there. The book is clean, pages lightly toned, spine slightly cocked. Light smudge near printing on p. xii. Between pp. 263 and 262 there is a section of an old newspaper that has left corresponding toning on those two pages. Signed by Author(s). Seller Inventory # 000837

Silver lettering, bordered in light green, with the anchor and sea horses decoration to the front. Spine lettering also silver. The colors and silver lettering are still very bright on the cover. About this Item: The Century Co, New York, 1900. First edition of "the finest single-handed adventure story yet written" (Seafarer). Octavo, original blue cloth. Pictorially stamped in silver and green, top edge gilt. Signed by author on the half-title page with a particularly nice inscription, "You must then know that you know the sea" Joshua Slocum onboard the Spray The Pan American Exposition Aug 29th 1901." In very good condition with rubbing and wear to the spine tips, contemporary inscription above Slocum's. Illustrated by Thomas Fogarty and George Varian. Sailing Alone Around the World was published by Century Company in 1900. The sailing memoir records Slocum's amusing experience as the first person to sail around the world alone. National Fisherman called it "[a] literary gem, adroitly and engagingly written," but interest extends beyond mere sea-aficionados. Excitement for the voyage was universal, and Slocum was awaited by admirers at his ports. To these he gave popular lectures and lantern-slide shows upon his arrival, including the English writers Edwin Arnold and Arthur Ransome. The memoir was first published in installments before its popularity became such that it was issued in lavishly illustrated book form. Slocum conveys an appreciably casual, almost self-deprecating, style. Contemporary reviews speak as well of it even now as "one of the most readable books in the whole library of adventure" (Sports Illustrated). "There is so much to this book that it is not surprising that it is has been continually in print since 1889.this book has literary merit, thoughtful and beautifully written and packed with incident" (Nautical Magazine).
