Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. No Jacket. 1st Edition. Condition: VG+. Stated 1st edition. 8vo. size, 337 pp. Glossy blue buckram covers with spine titles and design in silver. Illustrated throughout by the author, with both in-text black and white drawings and full-page sepia chalk drawings. Kent's semi-autobiographical story of his second trip to Greenland, and his relationship with his native housekeeper, Salamina. The cover corners are lightly to moderately bumped, the spine head and heel have slight shelf crimping, and there are a couple extraneous white marks, but the covers have virtually no wear or rubbing at all, and are very fresh, bright, and clean. The gutters are lightly browned, there is a light former owner's ink inscription on the front flyleaf, and there is light soiling on the title page and a thumbprint on the introduction page. The page edges are very lightly browned, and there are a very few marks very widely scattered in the text, but otherwise the text is very bright and clean, and the binding is solid and square. Hardcover. Blue cloth boards with silver gilt lettering and illustration on spine, xix, 336 pp. 23 full-page bw illustrations. "First published in 1935, Salamina details artist and adventurer Rockwell Kent's second trip to Greenland. Salamina unfolds as a series of vivid vignettes, each illustrated with Kent's bold black and white drawings. Through his accounts of fishing trips and Christmas festivities, shared meals and budding friendships, Kent acquaints us with the Eskimo and Danish inhabitants of the small vibrant community of Igdlorssuit. Both the native people and the forbidding Arctic landscape held a special beauty for Kent, and he describes them with an artist's eye. Salamina is Kent's Eskimo housekeeper (kifak), who becomes a central figure in the book when she and her daughter come to share Kent's small hut for the year. Kent's wry self-reflection and his poetic meditations on nature, humanity and love make this an enduring classic of travel literature and artistic quest." - website description.
