About this Item: Bonfadini. Rome, 1587. Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. Speculum & Exemplar Christicolarum. Vita beatissimi Patris Benedicti Monachor Patriarche e Sanctissimi Title translates to: Mirror and example for the worshippers of Christ: the life of the blessed Father Benedict, most holy patriarch of monks Per R.P.D. Angelum Sangrinum Abbatem Congregationis Casinesis carmine conscripta. Romae AD. MDLXXXVII Hardcover. 20th century vellum binding (spine and corners) with marbled paper over boards and marbled endpapers. Good heavy handmade marbled paper. Spine labels in maroon and black with title and date. Binding attractive and tight. Red silk bookmark bound in. There are no blanks and none of the text, only the title page and plates. This is the plate volume from “Vita Beatissimi Patris Benedicti” printed by Bonfadini in Rome in 1587. The colophon page is not present here, but printing information is taken from a version on google.books. The complete book with text (my version has only the plates) runs to 246 pages including plates. 50 engraved plates including the engraved title page. Each plate measures 4.5 x 6.75 inches. The pages are 6.5 x 8 inches. These are large, detailed, and quite remarkable plates. The plate marks are clearly visible in the wide margins. They are unsigned and unnumbered. By collating with the digitized version on google.books, I find that plates 3 and 4 are missing. In looking at another online version, I have found a portrait of Benedict and a map which do not appear in my version or the google.books version. The plates are designed by Bernardino Passeri. They are finely wrought engravings, not the much more common woodcuts ordinarily seen in sixteenth century illustrated books. The artist, Passeri, is relatively little known. His name appears on only a few books around this time. His engravings of the life of St. Benedict is credited with establishing the iconography of saints, which was very influential on artists to come. The illustrations are quite nice and the whole volume is in very good condition. Please email for photos or to ask questions. Seller Inventory # Fred-W894

About this Item: Ex libro II Dialogorum Beati Gregorii II Papae. Romae, Anno Domini MDLXXVIIII (1579), 1579. Condition: molto buono. in-folio (400x280mm), titolo figurato e 49 tavole, numerati da 1 a 50, incisioni in rame all'acquaforte a piena pagina. Bernardino Passeri (1540-1590) e Aliprando Caprioli (1540 c. Cfr. Mortimer, Harvard Italian Books, n. 362. Thieme-Becker, V, 556 e XXVI, 283.
