Soft cover. Condition: As New. Sarngadeva's Sangitaratnakara edited by Deepti Omchery Bhalla is the latest addition to Bhavan's 'Natya, Nritya and Sangita Series'. Sangitaratnakara is a monumental work written around the 13th century by the great scholar who originally hailed from Kashmir and settled in the region of Devagiri (present day Daultabad) in Deccan. It is perhaps because of the detailed information it elucidates about the ancient tradition, incorporating with the tradition that existed, that this work became an important source of material for many scholars later. In Sangitaratnakara, Sangita is defined as an art form that combines 'Gitam'(melodic structures created by voice and stringed and wind instruments), 'Vadyam (syllabic structures created by skin covered instruments) and 'Nrittam'(visual forms created by movements of the various limbs of the human body).

The present volume of the annotated translation of Sangitaratnakara contains the second, third and fourth chapters of the text dealing with raga, miscellaneous topics pertaining to vocal music and prabandha respectively. These chapters deal with topics that are directly related to current practice. The format of the first volume has been followed in this volume has been followed in this volume, except a small deviation in the word-index, where a glossary has not been attempted on account of the special nature of the terms contained in the chapters presented here. The vast expanse of terms which is mostly comprised of nomenclature of raga-s, varieties of melodic rendering, prabandha-s and tala-s prescribed therein has been thoroughly scanned and thus the index is a mirror of the totality of contents. While the first volume was preceded by an earlier attempt at translation, the second volume presents the above-noted three chapters in English for the first time. This long awaited volume will be a welcome addition to the primary source-material for a study of the rich textual tradition of Indian music.

Druck auf Anfrage Neuware - Printed after ordering - The Sangitaratnakara ('The Ocean of Music') written by Sarngadeva in the 13th century is the most important theoretical work on Indian classical music. Its prologue, the Pindotpatti-prakarana ('The Section of the Arising of the Human Body'), deals with the Indian science of the human body, i.e. embryology, anatomy, and the Hathayogic heory of Cakras. The sources of this work are found in the classical medical texts (Ayurveda) such as Caraka, Susruta and Vagbhata, the Hathayogic texts as well as in the encyclopaedic texts (Purana). After philologically analyzing the mutual relation and background of these texts, the author demonstrates the reasons why the human body is described in this musicological work. His investigation reveals the Indian mystic thought of body and sound. This study, although an Indological one, is an attempt to answer the universal question what music is, i.e. how music is created in the human body, what the effect of music on the human body is, and what music aims at. The second half of the book consists of a translation of the original text of the Pindotpatti-prakarana, including commentaries, with plenty of annotations.
