An illustrated sequel to "The Night Before Christmas", number 55 in McLoughlin Brothers's "Snowflake Series", revealing what Santa does in the off-season. By the turn of the century, books such as the one at hand had familiarized the public with the details of the modern Santa myth, such as his home at the North Pole and his rewarding of well-behaved children. McLoughlin Brothers, the leading children's publisher and pioneer in colour-printing, first published George Webster's poem in 1869. As with many of their publications, they reprinted the work for many different festive seasons. They did not credit the illustrator of this edition; their in-house artists often supplied anonymous illustrations. In 2017 the Grolier Club held an exhibition dedicated to McLoughlin Brothers's picture books, titled Radiant with Color & Art. Square quarto, pp. 6. Publisher's illustrated wrappers, wire-stitched as issued. With 4 full-page chromolithographs, illustrations to text. Gift inscription to verso of front wrapper. Spine split at head and foot, wrappers creased, nevertheless well-preserved. A very good copy.

An illustrated spinoff from "The Night Before Christmas", unveiling the mystery behind Santa. McLoughlin Brothers, the leading children's publisher and pioneer of colour printing, first published Webster's poem in 1869 and reprinted it for many different festive seasons in their wide-ranging series of toy books; this volume is part of the "Snowflake" line. The illustrations remain very similar to those of the famous cartoonist Thomas Nast from the late 1860s. The artist is not credited; McLoughlin's in-house artists often supplied anonymous illustrations. Webster also provided verse for McLoughlin's retelling of Rip Van Winkle. In 2017 the Grolier Club held an exhibition dedicated to McLoughlin Brothers picture books, titled Radiant with Color & Art. Quarto, pp. 14, publisher's wrappers, wire-stitched as issued. With 6 full-page chromolithographs and illustrations to text. Christmas gift inscription dated 1893 above title. Spine rubbed, short closed tear to top of front wrapper, small faint mark to verso of wrappers, paper flaw at head of 3rd and 4th leaves. A near-fine copy.
