Through the debris of limbs, drinks trolleys, memories, blankets, and oxygen masks, two figures fall toward the sea: Gibreel Farishta, India's legendary movie star, and Saladin Chamcha, the man of a thousand voices, self~made self and Anglophile supreme. Clinging to each other, singing rival songs, they plunge downward, and are finally washed up, alive, on the snow~covered sands of an English beach. Their survival is a miracle, but an ambiguous one, as Gibreel acquires a halo, while, to Saladin's dismay, his own legs grow hairier, his feet turn into hooves, and hornlike appendages appear at his temples. Gibreel and Saladin have been chosen (by whom?) as opponents in the eternal wrestling match between Good and Evil. But which is which? Can demons be angelic? Can angels be devils in disguise? As the two men tumble through time and space toward their final confrontation, we are witness to a cycle of tales of love and passion, of betrayal and faith: the story of Ayesha, the butterfly~shrouded visionary who leads an Indian village on an impossible pilgrimage; of Alleluia Cone, the mountain climber haunted by a ghost who urges her to attempt the ultimate feat~ a solo ascent of Everest; and, centrally, the story of Mahound, the Prophet of Jahilia, the city of sandMahound, the recipient of the revelation in which satanic verses mingle with the divine. In this great wheel of a book, where the past and the future chase each other furiously, Salman Rushdie takes us on an epic journey of tears and laughter, of bewitching stories and astonishing flights of the imagination, a journey toward the evil and good that lie entwined within the hearts of women and of men. About this Item: Softcover. Condition: New. One of the most controversial and acclaimed novels ever written, The Satanic Verses is Salman Rushdie’s best-known and most galvanizing book. Set in a modern world filled with both mayhem and miracles, the story begins with a bang: the terrorist bombing of a London-bound jet in midflight. Two Indian actors of opposing sensibilities fall to earth, transformed into living symbols of what is angelic and evil. This is just the initial act in a magnificent odyssey that seamlessly merges the actual with the imagined. A book whose importance is eclipsed only by its quality, The Satanic Versesis a key work of our times. Seller Inventory # 5414952

About this Item: Viking / Penguin Group / Viking Penguin, New York, 1989. Hardcover. Condition: As New. Dust Jacket Condition: Near Fine. As-new save for some previous-owner pencil notations to the FFE. Number line 13 15 17 19 20 18 16 14, only; the 13th printing. in 1989, the Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini, political despot as well as top Muslim honcho of Iran, indicating that the 18th Century has not yet arrived in those environs, issued a "fatwa" ordering any Muslim who got the chance to murder the author for writing this supposedly sacrilegious book of speculative historical fiction about Mohammed (though much of the "sacrilege" is spoken by characters with whom the author clearly feels little sympathy.) Numerous killings and bombings (though not of author Rushdie, so far) resulted. In New York, the office of the community newspaper "The Riverdale Press" was all but destroyed by firebombs following the publication of an editorial defending the right to read the novel and criticizing bookstores that pulled it from their shelves. Two large bookstores in Charing Cross Road, London, (Collets and Dillons) were bombed on April 9, 1989. Though British bookseller W.H. Smith had sold "a mere hundred copies (per) week of the book in mid-January 1989", it "flew off the shelves" following the fatwa. In America it sold an "unprecedented" 750,000 copies by May, 1989. Rushdie earned about $2 million within the first year of the book's publication -- though the need to constantly relocate cost him his marriage -- and the book reportedly remains Viking's all-time best seller. Nobel prize winners Wole Soyinka of Nigeria and Naguib Mahfouz of Egypt both attacked Khomeini for his "fatwah" -- Mahfouz was later stabbed in the back by a crazed Muslim . . . if that's not redundant. In the U.S., the director of the taxpayer-supported Near East Studies Center at UCLA, George Sabbagh (an Egyptian), told an interviewer that Khomeini was "completely within his rights" to call for Rushdie's death. The Archbishop of Canterbury, Robert Runcie, apparently angling for the Neville Chamberlain Appeasement Award, demanded that the British government expand the Blasphemy Act to cover other religions, including Islam. (In fact, while Britain actually imprisoned John William Gott for making fun of Jesus in a pamphlet in 1921, their Blasphemy Act was finally repealed in 2008.) On Feb. 14, 1999, on the tenth anniversary of the original death threat, more than half the deputies in the Iranian Parliament signed a statement declaring "The verdict on Rushdie the blasphemer is death, both today and tomorrow, and to burn in hell for all eternity." We promise not to tell any of these morons if you buy this copy. 547 pp. Reduced from $20. Seller Inventory # 004214
