The good news, it's inscribed by Rushdie on the first endpaper, and includes two slips indicating the Dallas Arts and Letters Live event where it was signed. Dated March 2005, Dallas Museum of Art. The bad news is the owner has underlined and notated throughout the book. But it remains what it is, a signed first of Satanic Verses. Nice, solid, once read copy. Inscribed by Author(s).

[x], 550pp. With a $12.00 US price printed on the back as well as a UK price; copies differ in these respects, no doubt relating to issue. A little spotted to the head edge and less so the tail, the wrappers slightly rubbed with, on the upper wrapper, a couple of short grazes and a small corner crease, the red of the title faded on the spine, but a Very Good copy which has been signed by Rushdie on the half-title. The covers have some creases, light color loss at the joints, wear at the edges and an area to the front cover where the coating seems to be missing. The edges are also lightly soiled. However, there are no creases to the spine, the interior is clean, bright and without rips, tears, highlighting or underling. The inside of the DJ has evidence of a splash of liquid at the bottom of the spine, too -- our best guess is that the book got a slosh of tea on its corner after the DJ and mylar cover were already in place -- there is no damage visible unless you go searching around for it beneath and behind the DJ. A couple speckles on the top foreedge. No date on the title page. Copyright page dated 1989. Stated first American edition, with full number line 1 3 5 7 9 10 8 6 4 2. This was a publishing company, comprising some sixty entities, and incorporated in the state of Delaware for the express purpose of bringing out a softcover issue of The Satanic Verses. Originally published by Viking in London on September 26, 1988, with the first U.S. edition by the same publisher following on February 22, 1989. Signed by the Author to half title. Author's fourth novel. Winner of the 1988 Whitbread Prize for Fiction. Shortlisted for the 1988 Booker Prize (losing out to Peter Carey's Oscar and Lucinda). Gibreel Farishta, India's legendary movie star, and Saladin Chamcha, the man of a thousand voices, fall earthward from a bombed jet toward the sea, singing rival verses in an eternal wrestling match between good and evil. Then Supreme Leader of Iran Ruhollah Khomeini issued a fatwa against Rushdie and the publishers, leading to a number of bombings, killings, attempted killings, and riots. The British government provided round-the-clock protection for Rushdie, and though Rushdie eventually came out of hiding, the fatwa remains in place.
