Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. Dust Jacket Condition: Very Good. First Edition/First Printing. 1-10 number line. We have good news and bad news on this copy. The good news, it's inscribed by Rushdie on the first endpaper, and includes two slips indicating the Dallas Arts and Letters Live event where it was signed. Dated March 2005, Dallas Museum of Art. The bad news is the owner has underlined and notated throughout the book. But it remains what it is, a signed first of Satanic Verses. Nice, solid, once read copy. Inscribed by Author(s).

Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. Dust Jacket Condition: Very Good. 1st Edition. Hardcover with DJ. Black cloth spine, black paper over boards. Distinctive red-bordered DJ with gold lettering. Binding good and tight. On the back cover, the black cloth of the spine is faded a half tone lighter than the top half. On the DJ, there is a very slight tan tone visible on part of the white barcode. The inside of the DJ has evidence of a splash of liquid at the bottom of the spine, too -- our best guess is that the book got a slosh of tea on its corner after the DJ and mylar cover were already in place -- there is no damage visible unless you go searching around for it beneath and behind the DJ. A couple speckles on the top foreedge. No date on the title page. Copyright page dated 1989. Stated first American edition, with full number line 1 3 5 7 9 10 8 6 4 2. Signed on the title page by Salman Rushdie in black marker. Just his name; no date or inscription. 546 pages. Photos show this actual copy. Signed by Author(s).

Red, black and gold printed wrappers. 1/100,000 copies, followed soon after by another printing of 200,000 copies. The paperback edition of the book published on March 25, 1992 by a company called The Consortium, Inc. This was a publishing company, comprising some sixty entities, and incorporated in the state of Delaware for the express purpose of bringing out a softcover issue of The Satanic Verses. Originally published by Viking in London on September 26, 1988, with the first U.S. edition by the same publisher following on February 22, 1989. Signed by the Author to half title. Author's fourth novel. Winner of the 1988 Whitbread Prize for Fiction. Shortlisted for the 1988 Booker Prize (losing out to Peter Carey's Oscar and Lucinda). Gibreel Farishta, India's legendary movie star, and Saladin Chamcha, the man of a thousand voices, fall earthward from a bombed jet toward the sea, singing rival verses in an eternal wrestling match between good and evil. A whimsical and fantastic tale, as viewed through the prism of a magical realist lens. Its publication ignited an on-going debate on the dividing lines between freedom of expression, censorship, and religious tolerance. The book's reference to several verses that Satan allegedly tricked Muhammad into including in the Qur'an, and which were later expunged, as claimed by the controversial Arabian historian Ibn Ishaq, were the main source for the fatwa (religious edict) conferred upon Rushdie by Iran's spiritual leader, the Ayatollah Khomeini. It was officially lifted by his successors in September 1998 and the state-sanctioned reward nullified. Despite all this, Rushdie was repeatedly stabbed at the Chautauqua Institution in New York state on 12 August 1922, as he was about to deliver a lecture. He ruefully reflects on this attack which caused him to lose sight in his right eye, as well as the use of his left hand, in his 2024 memoir, Knife: Meditations After an Attempted Murder. "Exhilarating, populous, loquacious, sometimes hilarious, extraordinary. a roller-coaster ride over a vast landscape of the imagination." -The Guardian. 766. signed.

The British government provided round-the-clock protection for Rushdie, and though Rushdie eventually came out of hiding, the fatwa remains in place.
