Impreso por Leonardum Vegium,27 X 20 cm.Décimo Junio Juvenal, a pesar de ser uno de los mayores poetas satíricos romanos, es un desconocido para nosotros: apenas sabemos de seguro que nació en Aquino (Lacio) en época de Nerón (54-68 d.C.) y que murió durante el imperio de Adriano (117-138); probablemente participó en el ejército y en la vida política, residió en Roma en tiempo del emperador Domiciano y tal vez sufriera exilio. Sus Sátiras, dieciséis repartidas en cinco libros, son el modelo universal del género, que Juvenal deseó situar a la altura de las poesías épica y trágica y de la oratoria. Se refieren a la vida en la Roma contemporánea al autor, y tratan con una acidez despiadada y vitriólica a una variopinta galería de personajes: son víctimas de sus pullas los moralistas hipócritas, el estilo de vida en la urbe en la sátira 3, que muchos consideran la mejor, el gobierno de Domiciano, las mujeres en la misógina sátira 6, los literatos y los maestros, los que creen en la nobleza del linaje y los que sucumben a los vicios sexuales. Lo que hoy entendemos por sátira no se corresponde exactamente con lo que se entendía en latín por «satura». Este término designaba un género literario histórico con una forma métrica fija, un tipo de poesía hexamétrica. Con sátira no nos referimos ahora a un género con forma propia, sino a un tono, una intencionalidad crítica que puede aparecer lo mismo en la poesía, en el teatro o en la narrativa. Pero los elementos de crítica y humor, más o menos agresivo y burlesco, sin los que no concebimos hoy la sátira, proceden de la sátira romana, cuyo espíritu satírico es capaz de encarnarse en cualquier otro género literario. Juvenal es una de las voces más personales e influyentes de la historia de la sátira en la literatura occidental. Por la frescura y modernidad que conservan algunos poemas siguen llegándonos completamente vivas algunas de sus denuncias: el culto al dinero, la imposibilidad de vivir en la ciudad ruidosa y llena de peligros, el clientelismo infame, la tiranía, el servilismo político, etc. Incluso su xenofobia y su misoginia nos proporcionan por rechazo materia de reflexión y debate. Juvenal es un gran poeta que nos encandila y maravilla con la plasticidad de sus imágenes y la brillantez y fuerza arrolladora de su verbo.

Hay otra emisión que contiene también las "Satiras" de Aulo Persio Flaco, con frontispicio propio para ambas. López, Diego. Valencia de Alcántara (Cáceres), s. m. s. XVI ?, c. 1650. Maestro de Latinidad, poeta, traductor y gramático, "natural de Valencia, de la orden de Alcántara", como él mismo dice en las portadas de algunos de sus libros, nació en Valencia de Alcántara (Cáceres) en un año indeterminado de la segunda mitad del siglo XVI, y murió en lugar y fecha también inciertos a mediados del siglo XVII. Sus estudios los realizó en la Universidad de Salamanca como discípulo del Brocense y su carrera profesional se desarrolló fuera de las aulas universitarias, pues durante los años 1600 al 1631 estuvo como preceptor y maestro de Latinidad en distintas poblaciones menores. En 1600, fecha de su traducción de Virgilio, se hallaba como preceptor en Olmedo; en ese mismo año marchó a Cáceres para desempeñar ese mismo oficio; en 1610 se encontraba ya en Santo Domingo de la Calzada, ocupando el cargo de catedrático de Latinidad y Letras Humanas, según reza en la portada de su obra Commento en defensa del libro quarto del Arte de Gramática del Maestro Antonio de Nebrija; en 1615 ocupó ese mismo puesto en Toro, según dice él mismo en el prólogo de sus comentarios a los Emblemas de Alciato; hay constancia de que en 1631 estaba en Mérida, localidad en la que permaneció hasta 1642, según informan las portadas de sus dos últimas obras atestiguadas (la traducción y comentario de Valerio Máximo y la Declaración magistral de las Sátiras de Juvenal y Persio). Según Nicolás Antonio, Diego López regresó a Toro, donde se encontraba en 1652 dictando lecciones a los hijos de los ciudadanos principales. Fue Diego López uno de los humanistas más señeros de la España de la primera mitad del siglo XVII, que destacó, sobre todo, en sus trabajos de traducción y comentario de los clásicos. Especialmente importante es su traducción de las obras completas de Virgilio, pues es por esta versión por la que la inmensa mayoría de lectores del siglo XVII y aún del XVIII conocen al poeta de Mantua.
