Stereotyped edition. ***Please note that one illustration is missing from Scenes of a Clerical Life and the frontispiece to Silas Marner is partially missing - the page being archivally repaired. ***With a very attractively designed ex-libris black and white illustrated bookplate to front pastedown, with printed name F. Crawshaw showing a house, surrounding trees, a horse and family coat of arms. Attractive colour marbled front and rear endpapers and pastedowns. Five out of six remaining black and white steel-engraved illustrations to Scenes of a Clerical Life (missing illustration is "In The Rookery - Caterina and Anthony to page 154. Including frontispiece showing "Shepperton Church, As It Was". ***All three of the black and white illustrations to Silas Marner present but the frontispiece (included as one of the three illustrations) is only partially intact and backed onto thin card as an archival repair. ***Very good in green 1/4 leather spine over cloth-covered boards, with gilt titles and gilt borders to spine. Top edge of text-block gilt. Leather spine faded to brown. Edges of boards slightly rubbed. Corners slightly bumped. Contemporaneous, black ink owner's name, place and date inscription Arthur P.B. Breer Trin. Coll. Oxon Nov. 1885 on second free endpaper, and his name again with date Sept 9th, 1882 on recto of free endpaper before title-page of Vol III - Silas Marner. On the front of this page, the owner has written out in black ink two quotes from Arnold Toynbee. Before this page between the two volumes is pasted a newspaper cutting with pencil inscription above "Daily Telegraph Feb. 26th 1907 detailing a memorial to Mary Ann Evans (George Eliot) that is to be erected in Arbury Park where the author was born. As previously mentioned, the title-page illustration of Silas Marner - of "Raveloe Village" is partially torn away and page repaired archivally. There is a neat marginal note on inner margin of page 9 of Scenes of a Clerical Life in owner's handwriting. Head and tail of spine frayed, spine sl. faded, signs of wear to corners and joints and though the book has a very sl. lean, the binding is sound, apart from one very sl. loose gathering. Two armorial bookplates to front paste-down, another to reverse of half-title, two labels have been neatly removed from rear paste-down. VG+.
