About this Item: G. P. Putnam's Sons, New York, 1867. Cloth. First edition. viii, 238 pp. Theodore Sedgwick Fay (1807-1898) was a diplomat, poet and writer, born in New York, published his first novel in 1835, and held various diplomatic positions in London, Berlin, and Switzerland. His experience in German schools led him to adopt their methods, not yet in practice here: "It is intended that the scholar shall learn his lessons under the eye and with the aid of his teacher, who is to drill the class. Most of our American teachers do not teach, but hear recitations. Mr. Fay would have them go over each lesson with the class, and see that all its contents are mastered." Though complete in and of itself according to The Nation, an Atlas was also issued which is not present here. OCLC lists only 12 copies, mainly at the major research centers. Hard to find. Some wear at the extremities, endpapers toned, leaves exceptionally crisp and clean; very good or better copy. Seller Inventory # 25540

About this Item: D. F. Robinson & Co., Hartford, CT, 1832. Wraps. Condition: Very Good. First Edition. 14 leaves, plus yellow wraps. With 11 hand-colored maps. Early American school atlas that depicts Texas as part of Mexico, California as an "unexplored region", Argentina as the United Provinces, Columbia as including Venezuela, Ethiopia as encompassing much of lower (Southern) Africa, and many other boundary and national curiosities. Maps are dated 1828 to 1830. Contents, listed on the front cover, include maps of the World, North America, the United States, New England, the Middle and Southern States, Ohio and Indiana, South America, Europe, Asia and Africa as well as two charts. 4to, 11.5 x 9.25 inches, 29.5 x 23.5 cm, with printing on one side of each leaf. Wraps, made of card stock, have considerable amount of soiling and a few edge chips, now nicely repaired (filled in) and stabilized. Spine reinforced with sympathetic yellow cloth. Maps have soiling as well, albeit much might be deemed simply age toning. Maps and charts are nonetheless still clearly legible, without loss, and handsome. Binding resewn and thus stable, making somewhat trivial a closed tear and crease affecting some leaves on the lower part by spine. Seller Inventory # 001476

Name of Goodhue (J. H.) on upper part of front paper cover. He was important surveyor and mapmaker for New York, RI, CT, Pa in mid 19th c. Olney's Geography has the distinction of having caused a complete revolution in the methods of teaching geography. Olney was a practical instructor, and was dissatisfied with the existing textbooks and treatises, which began with an exposition of the science of astronomy, and, making the centre of the solar system the initial point, developed the scheme until it finally included the earth. Olney reversed this method. He began with the scholar's own continent ¿ in fact, in the very city, town, or village in which he or she lived, and made clear by lucid definitions the natural divisions of land and water, illustrating each instance by the use of maps. His plan was to familiarize the child with the surface of the earth by going from the near to the distant, and from the concrete to the abstract, and this system at once overthrew theoretic geography, and initiated the modern practical and descriptive science. An acclaimed British cartographer, Aaron Arrowsmith drafted accurate, detailed charts that earned him the titles of Hydrographer to the King of England and Geographer to the Prince of Wales, extremely important distinctions during an era when Britain ruled the waves. One of the first great British cartographers of North America, Arrowsmith introduced a new standard of excellence in mapmaking in the late 18th century and almost single-handedly made London the center for the cartographic trade. Arrowsmith built his great success on this ability to attract both commercial and general viewers through his combination of visual and scientific appeal. The most influential and respected map publisher of the late 18th and early 19th centuries, Arrowsmith issued maps that were the result of careful synthesis rather than systematic, scientific inquiry. His role in cartographic production was to gather the best available information from a wide variety of sources, weigh the relative merits of conflicting data, and compile the most accurate depiction possible of an area. Arrowsmith accomplished this synthesis better than any other commercial mapmaker of his day and, as a result, his maps were the most sought after and highly prized on three continents. Phillips 6064.
