Original full leather binding; rubbing and moisture staining to boards with worn corners, patch of surface peeling to leather at rear board's top edge, splitting lengthwise to front joint/hinge with front board a bit tenuous, slender 7cm split descending from head of rear joint but board still firm. Chipping across head of spine with uneven leather loss no deeper than about 1.25cm; spine leather darkened; spine's black title label intact with some flaking to gilt lettering but overall still fairly bright and easily legible; spine's thin double-ruled horizontal gilt stamped bars still bright as well. Past owner's name label "S.H. Hill" at front pastedown's top left corner. Soiling, moisture staining, and toning/foxing mostly to early and late leaves but with scattered occurrences to interior pages as well; creasing at bottom corners of early leaves; strong creasing to pages 71-72 with small paper loss at bottom margin not affecting text; light vertical creases to several rear leaves. Publisher advertisements on first and last leaves. Text block binding is still firm. Samuel H. Hill (1847-1922) was a prominent Carrollton, Alabama physician and pharmacist and son of Confederate Army surgeon Dr. Samuel F. Hill (1813-1895). Otherwise, clean, unmarked pages. Various steel-plate engraved illustrations throughout, depicting various medical conditions and cross-sections. A gorgeous volume, well-preserved, and in immaculate condition.Sir John Eric Erichsen was a British Surgeon born in Copenhagen. He studied medicine at University College, London, and at Paris, devoting himself in the early years of his career to physiology, and lecturing on general anatomy and physiology at University College Hospital. In 1844 he was secretary to the physiological section of the British Association, and in 1845 he was awarded the Fothergillian gold medal of the Royal Humane Society for his essay on asphyxia. In 1848 he was appointed assistant surgeon at University College hospital, and in 1850 became full surgeon and professor of surgery, his lectures and clinical teaching being much admired. In June, 1876 he was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society. His Science and Art of Surgery (1853) went through many editions, the above being its second. The later 1860 edition was the most commonly distributed publication used by Civil War medics. This comprehensive surgical manual was extremely popular in its time and the years to follow. The first American appearance of an extremely popular late 19th Century surgical manual written by a British doctor, which went through many editions, selling over 40,000 copies by 1895.
