Cloth. Condition: Very Good. Not Stated (illustrator). First edition. A first edition, first state of Waugh's amusing satire, based in the melodramatic world of journalism. The first edition, first state of this work, with 'as' being the last word on page 88, in the publisher's original cloth binding. A satire of sensationalist journalism, following a young William Boot, loosely based on Waugh's fellow reporter at the Daily Mail, William Deedes. Boot lives in genteel poverty, contributes to the newspaper the Daily Beast, and is strong-armed into becoming a foreign correspondent when the editors mistake him for fashionable novelist John Courteney Boot. Written by Evelyn Waugh, an English novelist, biographer, travel writer, journalist, and book reviewer known for his early satires Decline and Fall, and A Handful of Dust. A page of publisher's advertisements to the rear. In the publisher's original cloth binding. Externally, generally smart, though slightly faded to the spine. A couple of small marks to the boards and light shelf wear to the extremities. Two small tears to the head of the spine. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are generally bright and clean, with the occasional spot and handling mark, more so to the first and last couple of pages. Offsetting to the end papers. Very Good. book.

First edition, first printing. Published by Chapman and Hall in 1938. This is a very good copy, alas without the dust wrapper. The snakeskin cloth boards are with some wear to note. The front board is separated at the front gutter, showing internal cloth and stitching. The spine has some general abrasion to the cloth and the gilt titling is faded. The text blocks are markedly clean, but with some light foxing. Page 61 overhangs on the bottom edge due to a manufacturing error. There is some major toning internally, most notably at the full title page. Some foxing follows on the preliminaries. this copy is free from previous ink and overall in very good condition.
