About this Item: Aurum Press Ltd, 2006. Hard Cover. Condition: Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: Fine. First Edition. Deast jacket unclipped. No ownership marks. 94 pages clean and tight. Coloured plates through out. All the books illustrated in this irresistible little volume were collected by Michael Bell when he owned an antiquarian bookshop. His criterion for inclusion was simple: these were old books that raised a grin if not a guffaw from his customers as soon as they saw them. Some of the titles are simply mystifying or bizarre, others evoke a world which has long since vanished, but most frequent of all are the titles, like Scouts in Bondage itself, that now suggest something quite at odds with the author's original intentions. Over forty-five facsimile covers of a hilarious selection of books that graced publishers' catalogues prior to WWII. Titles that puzzle, astound or with entendres that have double'd over the years Size: 12mo. Seller Inventory # 141121

About this Item: Aurum Press, London, 2006. Hardcover. Condition: As New. Dust Jacket Condition: New. First Edition. 94 pages. Multiple copies of this title available. This book is an unread copy. Boards have no wear, rubbing or soiling. Pages are clean and unmarked and in excellent condition. All the books illustrated in this irresistible little volume were collected by Michael Bell when he owned an antiquarian bookshop in Lewes. His criterion was simple: these were old books that raised a grin if not a guffaw from his customers as soon as they saw them. Some are simply mystifying like the enigmatic "Book of Blank Maps"; bizarre like Frances E. Willard's perfectly straight-faced account, "How I Learned to Ride the Bicycle"; or simply evoke a world which has long since vanished like Paulo Montegazza's manual on "The Art of Taking a Wife". Sometimes it is the combination of title and cover artwork that does the trick, but most frequent of all is the title that now conveys a meaning quite at odds with the author's original intentions, the boy's story "Invisible Dick", for example, or another children's novel, "How Nell Scored". Quantity Available: 13. Category: Books on Books; Humour. ISBN: 1845131967. ISBN/EAN: 9781845131968. Inventory No: 09010022. This item is in stock in our Australian warehouse. About this Item: The Aldine Publishing Co., / Goodship House, London, 1934. Hardcover. Condition: Good. Dust Jacket Condition: Fair. Will close its text block, but rubbed to edges, also frayed and darkened to head and heel of spine, so a solid "Good." Mild foxing to final pages. No publication date stated; 1934 is our guess, though when books published at "Goodship House" were dated at all they usually run 1926-1932; other sources suggest 1930 for this title. Colour frontispiece duplicates jacket front panel. Colourful Salvation Army presentation plate dated 20/1/36 and affixed to FFE. Hard-to-find jacket itself is "fair"; frayed all along top edge and missing top 1/3rd of somewhat darkened jacket spine. "Made and Printed in Great Britain by Purnell and Sons, Paulton (Somerset) and London." The lesser of two copies now on offer. 192 thick pages. A book best known for its bizarre and (more lately) Politically Incorrect title. Reduced from $390. Seller Inventory # 003643

About this Item: The Aldine Publishing Co., / Goodship House, London, 1935. Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. Dust Jacket Condition: Good. Will close its text block. Some foxing to page edges and final page, but internal pages remain pleasingly white. Book smells old and slightly musty, but not unpleasantly so. No publication date stated; 1935 is our guess, though when books published at "Goodship House" were dated at all they usually run 1926-1932; other sources suggest 1930 for this title. Colour frontispiece duplicates jacket front panel. Presentation inscription to FFE from "Express and Star Fund" dated December, 1938. Hard-to-find jacket is "good" with small chips to corners and a closed one-inch tear to bottom center of front panel; spine somewhat sun-faded. (The red ink fades fastest, giving DJ spine panel a somewhat greenish tinge, here.) "Made and Printed in Great Britain by Purnell and Sons, Paulton (Somerset) and London / CF / 37 / 663." The better of two jacketed copies now on offer. A book probably best known for it colorful title, the meaning of which has clearly changed with time. 192 thick pages. Reduced from $690.
