Softcover. Condition: Fine. First edition. 3 titles bundled into one. "The Screwtape Letters" is a humorous and perceptive exchange between two devils, C. S. Lewis delves into moral questions about good vs. evil, temptation, repentance, and grace. "Mere Christianity" brings together Lewis' legendary broadcast talks of the war years, talks in which he set out simply to "explain and defend the belief that has been common to nearly all Christians at all times." In "Surprised by Joy," he recounts his search for joy, a spiritual journey that led him from a traditional Christian childhood in Belfast to a youthful atheism and, finally, back to a confident Christianity. Hardcover. Condition: Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: Near Fine. 1st Edition. London. Harper Collins Publishers. 2001. First Printing in this Edition (1 in number line on copyright page). Quarter bound spine panel over ochre boards. Gilt titles to upper board and spine. Unclipped dust wrapper very almost fine; hint of handling wear to the rear wrap. Book is fine. A milestone in the history of popular theology, 'The Screwtape Letters' is an iconic classic on spiritual warfare and the power of the devil. This profound and striking narrative takes the form of a series of letters from Screwtape, a devil high in the Infernal Civil Service, to his nephew Wormwood, a junior colleague engaged in his first mission on earth trying to secure the damnation of a young man who has just become a Christian. Although the young man initially looks to be a willing victim, he changes his ways and is 'lost' to the young devil. Dedicated to Lewis's friend and colleague J.R.R. Tolkien, 'The Screwtape Letters' is a timeless classic on spiritual conflict and the invisible realities which are part of our religious experience. Screwtape proposes a toast is an engaging and humorous account of triumph and temptation included for the first time in this edition. In the same attractive format as the 'Signature' editions, with the facsimile of the author's signature in gilt on the front board, pages trimmed at fore-edge.

Green cloth, spine lettered in gilt within a gilt frame. 160pp. Ownership signature on the front end paper, dated Montreal, October 1945. A nice clean copy in a slightly worn dust jacket, the spine of the jacket darkened and with some light chipping to edges, a short tear along the lower rear fold. The copyright page states: "First Canadian Edition / May 1945". The dust jacket of this edition is based upon that of the first American (Macmillan) edition of 1943, with no imprint at the bottom of the front panel, and a description of the book on the rear panel. The jacket corners are not clipped, and the jacket bears no price. Really quite a nice copy of the first Canadian Edition, issued three years after the 1942 English first edition. Dedicated to J.R.R. Tolkien. Not so common in the jacket. Not mentioned by Brown in his "In Pursuit of C.S. Lewis .".
