    Hardcover. Condition: Good. No Jacket. A Scriptural View of the Characters, Causes and Ends of The Present War. By Alexander McLeod, Second Edition, Published by Eastburn, Kirk & Co., New-York, Paul & Thomas, Printers, 1815, 235 pp, full original leather, 9 x 5.75", 8vo. In good condition. Light wear to extremities with minor scuffing along edges and corners. Top corner of front board is worn to the cardboard. Leather nicely preserved. Soft and rich in color. Spine ends lightly rounded. Minor imperfections to surface of leather. Ownership of Rueben Sanford, Wilmington, Essex County (New York) on fly. Sanford has signed the rear pastedown as well. Internally good with light toning and minor instances of foxing throughout. Some light age staining minimally throughout. Binding tight and intact. Nice. Please see photos. A scarce defense of the War of 1812 owned by a major who fought in the War of 1812, New York politician Reuben Sanford's book (1780-1855). He was a major of an independent battalion drawn from Essex County, New York, Sanford's Battalion, which was set off from the New York State 9th Regiment of Infantry during the War of 1812. He and his men fought in the Battle of Plattsburgh in September, 1814. He was a member of the New York State Assemily (Essex Co.) in 1814-1815 and 1816-17. He was a delegate to the New York State Constitutional Convention of 1821. He was Postmaster of Wilmington from before 1830 until 1842. He was a member of the New York State Senate (4th D.) from 1828 to 1831, sitting in the 51st, 52nd, 53rd and 54th New York State Legislatures. Alexander McLeod (1774-1833) was a Reformed Presbyterian clergyman, author, and editor. Dr. Samuel Johnson refers to the "elegance of conversation, and strength of judgement" of the elder McLeod, by whom the lexicographer was entertained when he visited Mull. He was a member of the New York City Historical Society and helped organized the American Society for Meliorating the Condition of Jews. He was fearless defender of human liberty, wherever individual, civic or religious.
