About this Item: Advanced Thought Publishing Co, Chicago, 1913. Hardcover. Condition: Near fine. 8vo, 441 pp + ads. Original black pebbled cloth, title stamped in gilt. Mild sunning to fore edge and spine, else a fine copy. Atkinson (1862-1932) was a New Thought writer and popularizer of Eastern ideas. According to American National Biography, he abandoned a his career as an attorney after a mental breakdown and began seeking spiritual truth. "He moved to Chicago, where he would become an influential exponent of the variegated, therapeutic religious beliefs that constituted the New Thought movement, with its emphasis on the self as a vessel of divine truth dispensing good health and improvement. Atkinson did not entirely abandon his legal career--he was admitted to the Illinois bar in 1903--but New Thought offered him a way to make his own life more fulfilling as well as a calling to disseminate, through books and lectures, a message that others would appreciate--and pay for.Atkinson's writings would have a profound influence on brothers Fenwicke and Ernest Holmes, founders in Los Angeles of the New Thought-inspired Religious Science, one of the most successful churchlike bodies to grow out of New Thought in the second half of the twentieth century. More generally, Atkinson contributed to the growing fascination among Americans with Eastern religious philosophies." In this book, he expands on the premise that "There exists in nature a dynamic mental principle--a mind-power--pervading all space--immanent in all things--manifesting in an infinite variety of forms, degrees, and phases.".
