Summary Daniel Ellsberg's memoir is both an insider's account of U.S. decision?making during the Vietnam War and a deeply personal story about how a dedicated Cold War strategist became one of the most consequential whistleblowers in American history. 1. Ellsberg's Early Career and Beliefs Ellsberg begins by tracing his path from Harvard economist to Marine officer to high?level Pentagon analyst. He believed strongly in U.S. foreign policy and saw himself as a patriot working to contain communism. His early assignments in Vietnam gave him firsthand exposure to the war's realities?far removed from the optimistic reports circulating in Washington. 2. Inside the Vietnam War Machine Working at the Pentagon and later at the RAND Corporation, Ellsberg had access to classified documents and internal discussions. He describes a pattern of deception across multiple administrations?Truman, Eisenhower, Kennedy, Johnson, and Nixon?each escalating the conflict while publicly insisting victory was near. The memoir details: inflated body counts misleading progress reports political calculations overriding military reality the widening gap between what leaders knew and what they told the public 3. The Pentagon Papers.

"This is a brilliant book. During the time Ellsberg relates, he was constantly called upon to write lengthy and detailed reports for officials already over burdened with endless reports they had to consume. He had to be clear, precise, cogent, and articulate. This highly developed skill is amply demonstrated in this book." Blue/Silver-White text. #033453 Size: 8vo. Signed by Author / Photographer. U. S. Add to basketFirst edition, presentation copy, inscribed by the author, "Feb 2, 2003. To Tom Hughes - With the greatest respect for your wisdom and foresight in this tragedy - if only your views had prevailed! Dan Ellsberg". Ellsberg's memoir recounts his role in the 1971 leak of the Pentagon Papers, which revealed that the United States had secretly expanded the Vietnam War. The recipient, Thomas Hughes, served as Director of the Bureau of Intelligence and Research from 1963 to 1969, where he was a powerful voice warning against escalation in Vietnam. In 1968, Hughes commissioned his own internal intelligence study into the war, which Time Magazine dubbed "the State Department's version of the Pentagon Papers" (Smith, p. 4). The report, which found similar conclusions to the Pentagon Papers, remained classified until 2004. Upon its final publication, Hughes wrote that its authors "have the ironic satisfaction of knowing that most of our forecasts have been vindicated by history. We can only lament that, while we were heeded, we were unable to persuade, sway, or prevail when it came to the ultimate decisions" (ibid.). Hughes's ownership signature is on the front free endpaper, and he has profusely underlined and annotated the text in red and black ink. Bruce L. R. Smith, The Last Gentleman: Thomas Hughes and the End of the American Century, 2021. Octavo. Original grey boards, spine lettered in silver. With dust jacket. Very light rubbing at extremities; a few nicks to unclipped jacket. A very good copy in very good jacket.
