Boards. Condition: Very Good. The 1954 1st edition --with the "Rinehart" logo to the copyright page-- of this infamous attack on the comic book industry over the alleged harmful effects of much of its content on America's youth. Solid and VG- in its gray boards, with light scuffing along the spine and soiling at the front gutter. Still though, a solid, presentable copy. Octavo, this copy missing its explosive bibliography at the rear (which for legal reasons was cleanly excised from almost every copy). Lacking its uncommon dustjacket as well.

Black and white illustrations (illustrator). First printing. The important and controversial book in which Dr. Wertham claimed to have found a link between criminal behavior and the reading of comic books, though his findings were based largely on undocumented anecdotes. However, Wertham's message found an eager and uncritical audience among crusaders for public morals, leading to Wertham being called to testify before the Senate Subcommittee on Juvenile Delinquency. The moral panic set off by Wertham's book and testimony led to the voluntary establishment of Comics Code Authority by the comics industry as an alternative to government regulation. This copy's 2 page bibliographical note at leaf 399/400 is intact. Most copies had this leaf excised prior to distribution due to pressure from the publishers listed thereon. Good in a good dust jacket. Minor extremity rubs to boards, slight mottling to pastedowns. Jacket has a few edge tears with minimal losses, some edge wrinkles, and a few small edge chips. Jacket spine slightly faded. Hardcover. Octavo. xii, 400 pages.
