About this Item: Basel, Johann Brandmueller, 1691. (525) p. Contemporary folding Vellum, 12° (The fourth Basle edition of this polyglot version of the Psalms by the Italian Dominican scholar Santes Pagninus, 1470-1536. The work contains the Latin version by Pagninus and a Hebrew version on facing pages. Pagninus is best known for his new Latin translation of the entire Bible which was published in 1528. His Bible translation stands out for its literal adherance to the Hebrew and was more accurate than the Vulgate, thus gaining the preference of many scholars. An earlier edition of this Latin translation of the Psalms present here is known to have been the main source of Marnix van St. Aldegonde's Dutch translation of the Psalms. Altogether a charming copy.) Heller, Marvin J. (2011). The Seventeenth Century Hebrew Book, p. 952-953 / Lenselink, S.J. About this Item: Printed for the author ; and are to be sold by H. Robinson, A. Cr. L. Fawn, London, 1656. Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. A bi-lingual edition. Hebrew with English transliteration. The Hebrew is vocalized (has the point or vowels). Robertson, William. pp. [viii], 250, 22, [ii]. Trace foxed, slight loss in corner of last page, not affecting text. Modern full calf, gilt extra. 8vo. The author, a graduate of the University of Edinburgh, was the leading Hebrew tutor in Cromwellian London, when learning Hebrew was all the rage. In spite of the grammatical error in the title, the book matches the Hebrew text of Psalms and Lamentations with an accurate Romanization, according to standard Sephardic pronunciation. Of special interest here is the author's six-page Epistle Dedicatory to his patron, John Sadler, constitutional lawyer, Member of Parliament, and Oliver Cromwell's private secretary and confidante. Sadler, John Harvard's brother-in-law, was one of the leading ideologues of the philo-Semitic Israelite-identifying party among the English Puritans. Robertson's career faded away after the restoration of the monarchy in 1660, but finally, in 1680 he was appointed as a Hebrew instructor at Cambridge. SCANS available upon request. About this Item: Paul Fagius, Isny, 1542. Hardcover. Condition: Good. Lacks leaf mem zayin (=Leaf 5 of signature 8) Psalm 66, which appears here in old manuscript. This manuscript leaf merely has the Psalm (without the commentary). Also lacks the Latin leaf "Cum Privilegio" that the censors were to sign. Some marginalia in Latin in a tiny, neat hand and a few corrections of Hebrew typos in the text. So clearly in its 470 year history this copy was, at some point, owned by a Christian. Hebrew inscription on the title page also testifies that it was once owned by Yosef bar Reuven who was known as Yuzlan. OCLC: Number of libraries worldwide that own item: 1. half calf, gilt spine, morocco label. This copy includes the addendum: two unnumbered leaves at the end: Teshuvoth ha-RaDaK le Nozrim (Responses of RaDaK to the Christians). Vinograd, Isny 18; Haberman, Perakim be-Toldoth ha-Madpisim ha-Ivrim (Jerusalem, 1978), page 163, number 8. The grammarian and biblical exegete R. David Kimchi (1160?-1235?), known in Hebrew by the initials RaDaK, and in Latin as Maistre Petit, was a native of Narbonne. As a result of the Almohad persecutions in Spain, his father Joseph Kimchi crossed over the Pyrenees Mountains, permanently settling in more amicable Provence. During the Maimonidean controversy of 1232, RaDaK took to Maimonides' defense. Though a rationalist, Kimchi did not hesitate to incorporate in his commentary rabbinic interpretations from the Talmud and Midrash. (EJ, Volume X, columns 1001-1004). One of the areas in which R. David Kimhi, as his father Joseph before him, excelled, was as a polemicist. Specifically, his commentary to Psalms devotes several passages to Christian-Jewish polemics. The so-called Teshuvoth ha-Ra-DaK la-Nozrim (Responses of RaDaK to the Christians), published as an addendum in some copies, is in reality but an extract of these passages in the commentary to Psalms. See Frank Talmage, Apples of Gold in Settings of Silver (Toronto, 1999), page 213. The one exception would seem to be Psalm 19 (15a) where RaDaK speaks of commandments that the gentiles claim are allegories. Regarding the importance of this particular passage in RaDaK's commentary, see Frank Talmage, HUCA 38:219 and David Berger, The Jewish-Christian Debate in the High Middle Ages (Philadelphia, 1979), page 359, number 23. This is one of the 18 books to be produced at the short-lived Hebrew press at Isny (department of Wurtemburg, Germany) during the years 1541-1542. The press was the brainchild of the Christian Hebraist Paul Bagius (Fagius), a Protestant minister. Proofreader of the press was the incomparable grammarian Elijah Bahur (Elijah Levita). Bahur had acquired a considerable reputation in Christian circles, having been the teacher of such famous men as Egidius da Viterbo, Sebastian Munster, and others. Bahur worked for Daniel Bomberg in Venice, but his relations with Bomberg's successor Cornelius Adlekind soon soured. It was at this point that the invitation arrived from Bagius. Elijah Bahur arrived in Isny with his two grandsons Joseph and Elijah, who worked as typesetters. We are told that Bahur found life in Germany dreary after having tasted of the more colorful Italian lifestyle. See Haberman, Perakim be-Toldoth ha-Madpisim ha-Ivrim (Jerusalem, 1978), pages 149-166. 107 (of 108) leaves plus two unpaginated pages at the end. Some staining and browning.
