Add to basketCloth. Condition: Good. Unamed (illustrator). A profusely illustrated edition of Late Rev. John Brown's 'The Self-Interpreting Bible'. A lovely example of Late Rev. John Brown's bible. John Brown's (1722-87) Self-interpreting Bible was originally published in 1778. Originally of Scottish farming stock, Brown was orphaned at twelve and became a shepherd. Having little formal schooling he taught himself Latin, Greek and Hebrew and later became a preacher in the Burgher branch of the Secession church. He wrote a number of books, many of them aimed at young people. This volume contains forty engraved plates. Rebound in cloth with the original spine preserved. Externally, generally smart. There is some wear to the extremities including marks to the boards. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are generally clean with some brown spotting, including to the plates and the occasional handling mark. There is one page towards the back (St paul's Epistles) which is missing a section of text, although the page has been mended. The title page has handling marks and perhaps has spent some time without boards. Good. book.

Add to basketCondition: Acceptable. Most items will be dispatched the same or the next working day. A readable copy. All pages and the cover are intact (dust cover may be missing). Pages can include considerable notes--in pen or highlighter--but notes cannot obscure the text. Fair condition two volume hardback set of Brown's Bible from 1806. Significant wear to the boards and spine of both books, with the boards loose and coming away from the main textblock. Volume one contains neat inscriptions to the front endpaper of a couple getting married, with further notations about their four children. Textblock edges are a faded marble, with thumbing and general foxing to pages commensurate with age. Needs rebinding but would make a nice set. More photos available on request.
