About this Item: Thomas Kelly. Hardcover. Condition: As Described. No Jacket. First Thus. Very hefty 17"x11" volume binds both books together, the Old Testament from 1834, the New Testament 1836, with numerous engravings, some, like the one of "Adam Naming the Creation" are truly stunning. The heavy leather covers w/marbled fep/pastedowns, are detached and have considerable surface wear as might be expected from a 180-year-old book, but remain hard and firm, backstrip is missing but the binding remains very tight. Some individual pages are beginning to loosen a bit, and one section of six pages bound together has detached from the main binding, but all pages appear to be present. Edges are tanned and there is foxing, though this is mainly (but not entirely) confined to the pages with and by the engravings, the bulk of the other pages are clean, save for the odd spot here or there. This seems to be the only one of its kind combining the two books on abe at the moment, and with some restoration this would be a truly superb book. Very heavy book will require some extra postage, especially if shipping overseas. Seller Inventory # 001652

About this Item: London Thomas Kelly n.d. circa, 1840. Folio (44 x 29 cm), engraved frontispiece (soft crease along centre), engraved pictorial title (lightly foxed), engraved portrait, 43 engraved plates (minor spotting etc), text in double-columns, contemporary black polished calf gilt, covers with broad gilt panels, spine richly gilt, raised bands, all edges gilt, an excellent example. A most imposing large format family bible in an excellent state of preservation. John Brown (1754-1832), minister and theolgian was of humble origins and little formal education, and worked as a shepherd in his early years. It was perhaps this background that led him to produce a well annotated bible intended to make it accesible to ordinary men and women: "The Self-Interpreting Bible remained in print until the twentieth century, in much revised form. Brown transferred lists, tables, and other such aids from his dictionary. The Bible was a far more substantial work, which did not prevent its becoming, as Robert Burns bore out, as familiar in Presbyterian households as John Bunyan's Pilgrim's Progress and Thomas Boston's Human Nature in its Fourfold State. Brown's text was furnished with a battery of cross-references, minor marginal notes, short introductions to each book, a summary of contents at the head of each chapter, 'reflections' on each chapter—in effect applying its message to readers—and explanatory footnotes. A lengthy introduction deals with the Bible's authority and inspiration, its interpretation, and biblical history from creation. All were intended, as the title made clear, to make the Bible accessible to the humblest reader, unlike much biblical scholarship today" (ODNB). Seller Inventory # 95194
