E. Brock. Still a pleasing copy in jacket of this work that looks to be a reprint of the Idylls series published earlier.

These are from the Chawton Edition, a limited edition - of which this is number 45 of 1250 sets. Bound in cloth with paper title labels on the spine. Top edges gilt. These volumes measure approximately 8.75" x 5.75", with 225 and 302 numbered pages respectively. These volumes are in good plus condition. Moderate bumping and tearing to both ends of spine. Minor staining to the boards, most noticeable on the spine. "Sense and Sensibility" was first published anonymously and later acknowledged to have been written by Jane Austen. Third edition in this form: complete in 2 volumes, edited by R Brimley Johnson, with portrait frontispiece of Jane Austen, and 12 colour plates by C E Brock. In original decorative cloth bindings with gilt titles to spine and front board. The top page edges are gilt; the remaining edges are uncut. With half titles, showing that they were volumes I and II of Brimley Johnson's series; colour frontispieces; decorative title pages; listing of illustrations; and text with head and tailpieces. Volume I has a listing of Austen's novels together with a short biography. All the plates are present as called for and are tissue guarded. Vol I has 163 pp and Vol II has 218 pp. The bindings are sound and tight, having been rebacked - preserving the original spines. The front boards are slightly faded with some browning to edges. Spines faded. Vol I has a small brown spot on the front board and a couple of small indentations on the bottom edge of the back board. Internally the decorative endpapers are present with professional repair at the joints. Contents are clean with toning to text pages and occasional light spotting - particularly around top margins. A number of tissue guards have been replaced. Vol I has a crease to the bottom corner of the front free endpaper and a further crease at the bottom corner of p 87. There are some professional paper repairs to page edges. Vol II has its original page marker. Paper repair to side edge of p 183/4. Please enquire if you would like to see additional images.
