The original signed illustration for the 1908 edition of Sense and Sensibility published by J. M. Dent & Co. in their Series of English Idylls. Charles Brock and his brother Henry prided themselves on the historical accuracy of their illustrations; they collected antique furniture and clothing, and used friends and relations to model them in their Cambridge studio. Charles Brock was elected a member of the Royal Institute of Painters in Watercolour in the same year as publication of these illustrations. The illustration shows Marianne walking out alone after a sleepless night weeping over Mr Willoughby. Original pen-and-ink water colour illustration. Paper size: 38 x 26.5 cm. Image size: 29.5 x 17 cm. Framed size: 50.1 x 37.2 cm. In excellent condition. Pin holes top margin and small stain. Archivally re-backed. Presented in a hand-made white gold leaf frame with conservation acrylic glazing.
