First Edition
Hardcover. Condition: Near Fine. Michael Montfort (photographer0 (illustrator). Limited Edition. Large 8vo. Pp. 375. Includes one b&w Bukowski photograph by Michael Montfort. Bound half black cloth over color-illustrated paper-covered boards, printed spine label mounted on spine. Slight scuff on rear board; frpnt board with light stain at lower edge. Edition limited to 1000 unnumbered copies. First printing of the first edition. Boozing and womanizing in low-rent bars, at the racetrack, in neighborhoods on the other side of the tracks, usually in lousy apartments: These are Bukowski's subjects, wrought from first-person experience. This collection published when Bukowski was at the height of his fame following the 1987 movie "Barfly" that brought the writer to the attention of the masses - or at least those at least half-conscious. A handsome copy.

First Edition. Limited Issue, one of 500 numbered copies specially bound and signed by the author, this being copy no.348. Octavo (23.5cm); printed paper-covered boards and royal blue cloth backstrip, with title label mounted to spine; publisher's original acetate dustjacket; [12],13-375,[5]pp. While not called for, this copy has been additionally inscribed by Los Angeles bookseller Sholom "Red" Stodolsky, along the lower margin of p.257 at the poem Bukowski wrote and dedicated to him: "To Todd / An old but welcome friend / Red Stodolsky / 8/18/90 / On Hank's 5th Anniversary." Touch of dustiness to rear cover, else Fine in a lightly rubbed, Near Fine dustjacket, with the publisher's prospectus laid in. A substantial collection of prose and poetry published to coincide with Bukowski's 70th birthday. Sholom "Red" Stodolsky (1916-1998) operated the Baroque Bookstore in Hollywood, CA from 1972 until his death in 1998. Red was a close friend of Bukowski's, and a great champion of his work, stocking his books in the Hollywood shop and hosting poetry readings and signings. As a sign of respect and affection, Bukowski immortalized his friend in the poem "Red" (1989) and in his novel "Pulp" (1994). While unclear how many such copies Stodolsky may have signed or inscribed, this is the first we've seen or handled. Krumhansl 114c.
