About this Item: Doubleday, Doran and Company, Garden City, NY, 1928. Hardcover. Condition: Acceptable. Cloth, no dj, fading to spine and covers, internally clean. Signed by Skeyhill with the remark, Alvin York once told me -- "When you're in danger, slow up and think fast." Paper-clipped in is a brochure with information about Skeyhill, and laid in is a visiting card recording the gift of the brochure. Thomas John Skeyhill (1895-1932), was an Australian soldier and lecturer. He was blinded by a Turkish shell in the Battle of Gallipoli, though he later recovered his sight. While convalescing, he began composing verses and lectures which he would later recite. Beginning in 1917, he lectured in America, and was regarded as a "sensation" for his performance at Carnegie Hall. Former president Theodore Roosevelt called him, "the finest soldier speaker in the world." He met Medal of Honor winner Sergeant York while working as a lecturer for the U. S. Government. They worked together on this biography/diary. It would later serve as the basis for the 1941 movie biography of Sgt. York, staring Gary Cooper. B009EQQOHY. Signed by Editor. Book.
