About this Item: William Mackenzie London (1880), 1880. 1st edition hardback in decorated cloth Very Good large octavo 57-282pp., b/w pls., text ills., plans, With 240 fine colour plates, including 6 vignette coloured half-titles illuminated in gilt. The plates were drawn by Alexander Francis Lydon & printed from coloured woodblocks by the Baxter process by Benjamin Fawcett of Driffield, Yorkshire. The plates are noted for their precise printing and rich colouring and Fawcett printed each plate in an average of eight colours. 'Friedman in 'Color printing in England, 1486-1870' remarks that Fawcett's ink tones are so subtle and transparent that they have the appearance of watercolour and that his transparent colours were especially suited to Lydon's crisply-drawn renderings of immaculately tidy grounds bathed in sunlight and with gardens abloom. 'In 'The Illustrator and the Book', Ray opines that this work accomplishes for colour printing what Pyne's Royal Residences did for aquatint engraving'. Bindings rather worn & with some boards detached. Internally excellent with all plates called for & in first class order. Would restore beautifully. Seller Inventory # 131193

About this Item: London/Edinburgh/Dublin, William Mackenzie, ca. 1880., 1880. 4°, Ledereinband. With 240 chromolithgraphs, bound in publisher`s full cherry red morocco with gilt titles and design, aeg, 5 raised bands on spines. Each volume profusely illustrated with color chromolithograph plates. The front board to vol. 1 is detached and also cracked along the rear hinge and held by the cords, vol. 2 is also cracked along the front hinge and also held by the cords and cracked in places on the rear hinge. The other volumes have some wear on the hinges and are solid, the boards are lightly rubbed with some small scrapes mainly on the edges and corners to varying degrees. Vol`s 1 & 2 boards are faded while the others are bright. Some shelf wear and tiny chips on the bevelled edges and most of the corners are chipped and bumped. All the spines are rubbed, vol.1 & 2 are lightly chipped on the top & bottom and vol. 2 has a small close tear below the second band. Vol.1 & 2 have previous owner`s name written on the fly leaves while the other volumes have Armorial bookplates on the pastedowns. All the books have some offsetting that affect the pages behind the plates as all the plates come with their guard sheets to the fore. Vol. 1, 2 & 3 has some water staining along the bottom edges throughout the books and sporadically on the top edges otherwise are clean. The staining does affect the pictures just on the border edges. The other 3 volumes have no problems and are clean. All the books are firmly bound. Still a nice set to own.
