About this Item: Gale Ecco, Print Editions, United States, 2010. Paperback. Condition: New. Language: English . Brand New Book ***** Print on Demand *****.The 18th century was a wealth of knowledge, exploration and rapidly growing technology and expanding record-keeping made possible by advances in the printing press. In its determination to preserve the century of revolution, Gale initiated a revolution of its own: digitization of epic proportions to preserve these invaluable works in the largest archive of its kind. Now for the first time these high-quality digital copies of original 18th century manuscripts are available in print, making them highly accessible to libraries, undergraduate students, and independent scholars. The Age of Enlightenment profoundly enriched religious and philosophical understanding and continues to influence present-day thinking. Works collected here include masterpieces by David Hume, Immanuel Kant, and Jean-Jacques Rousseau, as well as religious sermons and moral debates on the issues of the day, such as the slave trade. The Age of Reason saw conflict between Protestantism and Catholicism transformed into one between faith and logic -- a debate that continues in the twenty-first century.++++The below data was compiled from various identification fields in the bibliographic record of this title. About this Item: London: printed for T. Cadell, 1788. Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. No Jacket. 1st Edition. [6],18p.; 8vo. With the advertisement leaf for two of Johnson's publications often missing from the three preliminary leaves. Later half brown morocco, cloth boards. A very nice copy. Courtney and Nicol Smith p.170. Maggs Samuel Johnson Catalogue no 197. Chapman and Hazen, p.167. A moving and concise statement by Johnson of his Christian faith, his belief in the existence of the soul and his certainty of life after death, preached on the occasion of his wife's funeral. Originally published in a collection entitled "Sermons on Different Subjects, left for publication" by John Taylor, LL.D., Johnson's lifelong friend. The editor's note, on a leaf following the title page of this first separate edition, states "The following sermon (the Authenticity of which cannot be doubted) came, with many others, into the hands of the Editor by the death of Dr. Taylor, late Prebendary of Westminster, etc. It is now published for two reasons: first, as it is a composition that will reflect no disgrace on the author; and, secondly, as it is upon a subject of the highest importance to mankind." "To afford adequate consolations to the last hour, to cheer the gloomy passage through the valley of the shadow of death. is the privilege only of revealed religion. All those to whom the supernatural light of heavenly doctrine has never been imparted, however formidable for power, or illustrious for wisdom, have wanted that knowledge of their future state, which alone can give comfort to misery, or security to enjoyment; and have been forced to rush forwards to the grave, through the darkness of ignorance or, if they happened to be more refined and inquisitive, to solace their passage with the fallacious and uncertain glimmer of philosophy.".
