Jahrhunderts; als Vertreter eines Gottes- und Christusmystizismus war er ein Gegner jeglicher Dialektik, propagierte an entscheidender Stelle (Eugen III) den zweiten Kreuzzug und wandte sich gegen die päpstliche Weltherrschaft. Die Authentizität seiner Texte ist nicht gesichert, doch werden die hier vorliegenden extensiven Kommentare (in 86 Predigten) zum Hohen Lied (cantica canticorum Salomonis) als sein Hauptwerk betrachtet (vgl. RGG 1, 923f). Über Gilbertus ist wenig mehr bekannt und/oder gesichert als sein Kommentar zum Hohen Lied und eine Vita Bernardi, die von Mabillon zusammen mit dem Bernardus-Text herausgegeben wurde (vgl.
