About this Item: Tinsley Brothers, London, 1862 First Edition. Hardback., 1862. 8vo. pp x, 307; 307; 295. Recently rebound in dark brown half leather with marbled boards, lettered gilt at the spine with gilt decoration, and 5 raised bands. All edges gilt. Small postage stamp portrait of Sala, possibly on a stamp at corner of title page of vols 2 and 3. Introducing Florence Armytage, the 'she-demon' with yellow ringlets. 'The Oxford History of the Novel' says of this book that it "hinges on the hidden past of Sir Jasper Goldthorpe - the richest man of 'Change'. A biting satire on the contemporary financial system, Sala's novel sets the legitimate world of speculation in close proximity to its shady underside of forgery and confidence tricks. Goldthorpe has done with all his mercantile speculations now he dealt in money and money alone, just as his former partner moves between money-lending, forgery and financial scams. 'The Seven Sons of Mammon' has a convoluted plot which moves between extremes of opulence and poverty, and features disguised identities, returns from the dead and a beautiful villainess." VG+ set. Excellent condition. Seller Inventory # C52695
