About this Item: Russell & Russell, New York, 1964. Hardcover. First US edition. Octavo, maroon cloth, spine gilt lettered. pp (viii, including frontispiece), (208), [8] + 7 plates on text paper and one facsimile in text. Library discard: shadow of removed label on lower spine; small evidence of removed label on rear free endpaper; rubber stamps on all page edges and to two lower margins in text; else a VG clean and unworn copy without jacket, as issued. To be bibliographically precise, this is actually the second US issue (but first printed in the US), a facsimile reprint from plates of the London: Dent, 1939, first printing (of which there was a first US issue made by putting a small label of the US distributor on the title pages of a small number of British copies). Russell & Russell served the library trade with reprints; very, very few copies of this edition would gone anywhere but to libraries. It is not known how many were printed. My best guess would be 300 give or take. This edition is today very much scarcer than the original 1939 edition (1500 printed and sold) and is about as good a copy as one can hope to find. The author's first book, published when he was still an undergraduate at Oxford, and still a useful text on its subject. Seller Inventory # 42038

About this Item: Hardcover. Condition: Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: Good. 1st Edition. London: J. M. Dent, 1939. First edition (vii, 207, index, bibliography [208]), frontis and eight plates. Octavo, in scarce dust wrapper, blue cloth with gilt titles to spine, impressed decoration to front cover. Damaged dust wrapper not price clipped (10s/6d) skilfully preserved, laid down on archival paper and largely intact; missing irregular 5.5 cm piece from spine (which reads ‘W. / Robertson/ .’), edges worn all around, faded. Binding and text are clean and bright. Davies’ first book, his Oxford honours thesis, reflects his early and abiding interest in play-acting and illusion. With the bookplate and from the collection of Duncan Guthrie, O.B.E., who served with British special forces in Norway, France, and Burma during WWII and who after the war became a leading fund-raiser for medical research and advocate for children’s health. “With his wife Prue [he] set up the National Fund for Poliomyelitis Research. Following this, the fund supported many other aspects of medical research in relation to problems of disablement and funded the endowment of 13 medical chairs in universities in the United Kingdom.” Guthrie was, in addition, “a scholar of the stage and of English literature, for which he had a prodigious memory” and thus no doubt his ownership of quite a scarce book (The Independent, 1994). About this Item: J.M. Dent & Sons, London, 1939. Hardcover. 1st Edition. London: J.M. Dent & Sons, 1939. 1st Edition. Hardcover. First edition of the author's rare first book. 8vo., pp. vii, 207, [1] [Bibliography]. Publisher's [electric] blue cloth covered boards, clean blue topstain, gilt-lettered at the spine with the blind-embossed crest on the front cover. Eight black & white plates. A very nice, near fine or better copy, in a very good or better copy of the rare [pc] illustrated white dustwrapper showing minimal use; 1 tear neatly mended on the verso of the back panel. An excellent, bright, unfaded example of this Davies highspot & in definite collector's condition. Davies account of the life & training of the Elizabethan boy actors, a consideration of their particular abilities & shortcomings, & discussion of the extent to which these actors set free or hampered Shakespeare in his female characterizations. Very scarce indeed. Most of the edition was pulped to accommodate the paper shortage of the war years. Perhaps a few hundred copies were actually sold which accounts for its infrequent appearance on the market. In the last twenty-five years, less than a dozen copies have surfaced in varying states of perfection or lack thereof, usually without dustwrapper, in both the Toronto & Montreal markets.
