John Howe (1754 - 1804), fourth lord Chedworth, lived in a house owned by the surgeon Thomas Penrice, one of Chedworth's legatees, and who published this book after his death in order to prove his friend's sanity. Birmingham Free Libraries stamp at foot of F1, else a fine copy. The exceedingly rare first issue with the inflammatory foot note to page vii present and the three leaves A2, A4 and E2 are uncancelled. They contain libelous remarks about George Steevens. Lacks called for Leaf F1 but with an uncalled F1 leaf which is the prospectus On George Steevens' edition of Shakespeare dated 18th April, 1783. This was originally issued as the last leaf of Ritson's 1783 work "Remarks, critical and illustrative, on the text and notes of the last edition of Shakspeare."
