About this Item: Conway. 1986 1st, 1986. . xiv. + 178pp. Prof ills. 25x19. Almost like New. Near-Mint in Near-Mint d/j.; The post-war years of the Shaw Savill Line saw the building of some of the company's finest ships, notably the innovative passenger liners Southern Cross and Northern Star. But they also witnessed a general decline in world shipping and Britain's entry into the EEC put a virtual end to Shaw Savill's traditional lucrative trade with New Zealand. Illustrated by over 100 photographs & 30 line drawings, this book charts the fortunes of one of the great post-war shipping empires before their last ship was sold in 1986. Seller Inventory # 3194

About this Item: Conway Maritime Press, London, 1986. Hard Cover. Condition: NF. Dust Jacket Condition: NF. Photos, Profiles (illustrator). 1st. Sub-titled "The Post-War Fortunes of a Shipping Empire", Richard de Kerbrech's book covers the final years of Shaw Savill and Albion (SSA), from the end of WWII until its last ship, "Dunedin", hauled down the company's house flag to signal the end of a shipping line closely associated with the NZ-UK trade from the 1850s. This excellent history complements two much earlier books by Frank Bowen, the first "Flag of the Southern Cross 1858-1938" with a sequal of the same title recording the company's part in the WWII, covering the years 1939 to 1945. At the latter date the SSA fleet comprised seven passenger ships and 10 cagro carriers. A number of these survivors dated back to before, during or just after WWI. Thus, de Kerbrech's history covers the post-war rebuilding of the fleet and the disposal of the older vessels. War losses were 13 ships, half the pre-wat fleet. Apart from the rebuilding of the SSA fleet particularly notable events were the selection of the Gothic to act as the Royal Yacht for the Royal Tour of the South Pacific, New Zealanmd and Australia in 1953, later in the '50s the trend-setting new liner "Southern Cross" joined the fleet, remarkable for her innovative engines-aft design. Changes to the cargo carrying fleet also took place with the traditional superstructure and funnel amidships giving way to the accommodation and funnel housing gradually moving further aft. At this time major advances were made regarding cargo handling equipment. However, the dramatic shippingt revolution, the container era, came late in SSA's operations with the last ship "Dunedin" designed for this type of trade, The period from 1945 to 1986 was one of great change and challenge for SSA, the major problems associated with the decline of the British Merchant Navy applied equally to its operations and from a high point in 1967, when the fleet stood at 35 ships, by 1986 the last, "Dunedin", was sold to German buyers. In the post WWII period SSA lost two ships to grounding, one the cargo ship "Runic" which went on Middleton Reef while on a voyage Brisbane to Auckland in 1961. Although high and dry on the ship became a total loss and the author noted that at the time of writing the remains this ship were "a silent sentinal, a monument to the Company's once great presence on the oceans." The final era of that "presence" are recounted in this fine work which contains many anecodotes of life at sea and ashore, changes in management policies and shipping operations, including interaction with other shipping companies and joint-ventres, particularly in the latter years of SSA. For maritime enthusiasts with a specific interest in shipping activities in the Great Britain-Australiasia trade this volume can be regarded as required reading. First edition of 1986 published by Conway Maritime Press, 178 pages including fleet list, ship painting schemes, bibliography and index. Illustrated throughout with b/w photos, fleet list accompanied by 28 detailed ship profiles. Grey hard covers with gilt spine titles are NF, former owner label top corner FFEP, text block has a number of ship names highlighted in yellow, text block otherwise NF. Colour art wrap-round DJ by Nigel V Robinson depicts three ships from the company's fleet, the " Wairangi" (1942), the "Southern Cross" (1955) and the Gothic (1948), in her Royal Yacht livery. Jacket is unclipped and also NF. Size: 24,5cm By 19.5cm. Seller Inventory # 004988
