About this Item: The New York Public Library, New York, 1962. Soft Cover. Condition: Very Good. This is a very good softcover, two volume set, in the original pale pink stiff card covers. Both volumes completely clean inside. The second volume: Ted Shawn and his men dancers, has a stain on the cover at the edge of the spine, a tan streak. Both volumes were written by Christena Schlundt. Ruth St. Denis and Ted Shawn was published in 1962. Ted Shawn & his Men Dancers was published in 1967. The first volume covers the dances between 1906 and 1932; the second volume covers dances from 1933 to 1940. Both volumes illustrated in black & white with vintage photographs drawn from the New York Public Library's extensive Dance Collection, which is particularly strong in relation to Ruth St. Denis and Ted Shawn, with 70,000 clippings and over 8,000 photographs. Christena Schlundt's intent was to show what Denishawn dance was all about and how popular it was in America, at a time when modern dance as such did not exist. One of the Denishawn dancers was Martha Graham. Jerome Robbins was a pupil of the school in New York set up by St. Denis and Shawn. 10" high X 7" wide, 85 & 75 pages. A program for a celebration of Denishawn from 1976, titled 'The Spirit of Denishawn' is laid in. Seller Inventory # 011872

About this Item: Academy of Music, Philadelphia, 1923. Paperback. Condition: Very Good -. [16] p.: illustrated advertisements; 26 cm. Wrappers, dated April 7, 1923, at foot of front wrapper. This is the program for a performance of Ruth St. Denis with Ted Shawn and the Denishawn Dancers (Martha Graham, Pearl Wheeler, Betty May, Lenora Scheffer, Julia Bennett, May Lynn, Louise Brooks, Charles Weidman, and Robert Gorham). With an instrumental quartet conducted by Louis Horst, pianist; J. Frolig, violin; Augusto Scalzi, flute; and Peter Kleynenberg, cello. The program includes many advertisements for Philadelphia businesses, some of them illustrated. The advertisements include: Newman Normal School of Dancing; Strawbridge & Clothier offering a variety of Victrolas; William Moennig violin maker and repairer; the Weymann mandolute; and the Philadelphia Orchestra under Leopold Stokowski. A very scarce program from a pivotal moment in the early career of Martha Graham. In Very Good- Condition: wrapper is soiled; staples are rusting; otherwise clean and tight.
